Review
"An exhaustive research document on the history of city planning in the United States. . . . A cartographic gem."--The New York Times
"An extraordinarily handsome volume."--The Los Angeles Times
"This excellent book may well be described as the missing link in American town planning history. No book [to date] has comprehensively dealt with American urban development from the earliest colonial settlements to modern times. Reps has filled this gap with his lavishly illustrated work."--Journal of the Town Planning Institute

Great Text, Terrible Plates
By Diego Marzipan
The quality of the written content of this book is superb. The chapters are well organized and written simply in a manner where a great deal of information is conveyed. The breadth of what is covered is also excellent which is why this book is required reading at many Urban Design and Planning schools.
The number of maps in this book is truly astounding. However the print quality is so poor that most of them are hopeless obscured sometimes to the point of being rendered unreadable and are thus useless for learning. The entire book is printed on very poor quality "pulp-paperback" type paper that you would find in popular fiction paperbacks, hardly appropriate for a book with 300+ illustrations, maps and figures. The large format pages do very little to ameliorate this problem.
The printing does not do justice to this book. As an avid map collector, I am sure Reps would not be pleased with the quality of the map reproduction. I can't recommend purchasing this book until this problem is fixed, for now this is something I would have instead borrowed from a local library.

The Making of Urban America. A History of Planning in the United States
By Fred D. Fishback, AIA Emeritus.
Great historical depth for a better understanding, not only by the general public but also by those professionals who are urban planners and/or architects, hopefully working in the "best interest" of their general-public clients, as opposed to the best interest of public officials.

John Reps deserves his reputation as an outstanding educator and author. This book is proof of his ability to communicate the rich qualities of American cities and the planning that make them great. I highly recommend this book to all that love learning about cities.
