Another Great Book by Dan Thompson

I read and enjoyed Dan Thompson’s novel, Here Lies Love, so I was looking forward to the release of The Black Petal. It did not disappoint.

While I tend to read adult fiction, this novel was a real treat. Without spoilers, It follows a teen from current day, Jack, and a Victorian assassin, Blake who find themselves transported to a fantastical world. Thompson deftly developed both characters and their timelines. The switching from the Victorian era to the present to fantasy is easy to follow.

Thompson loves rich description and uses it well in this epic fantasy. In fact, though early drafts of this book apparently was originally written before Here Lies Love, the writing feels more solid as if Thompson is coming into his style.
I enjoyed it immensely.

The Black Petal by Dan Thompson

This book blew my socks off it was so fabulous. I am a slow reader, but could not read it fast enough in the end as it was so very exciting, especially the battle scenes. Dan has his own unique and totally fresh way of telling a story. You can tell from reading it that every detail from the armoury, to the horses, to the types of weapons, all have been thoroughly researched and thought about, so the account of the battle is so totally believable.

I loved that even though the two main characters were men – Blake and Jack – most of the characters were woman and he describes them beautifully, even the ugly oracle. I love all the mythical creatures, and particularly liked Dan’s description of the phoenix bird.

The Black Petal leads you into exploring the lives of two young men who share the same soul. They are both from planet Earth, but from different time frames and have completely different personalities. Jack is an average teenager who starts off unsure of himself, but who’s character grows throughout the story. Blake is a ruthless professional Victorian assassin, very sure of himself, but who’s personality softens after an incident where a woman saves his life. Both get drawn into a parallel universe by a three legged dog, and then meet not only meet each other but all manner of tests and adventures.

This is a jolly exciting read and so very well written. No one I have ever read describes the landscape and the sky as poetically as Dan does. He invents a world that you feel you know or have been to as it’s described so beautifully and accurately. No one is able to transport you to the deepest cave or the highest palace in the sky as Dan does. He describes the fear that coursed through Blake’s body as he fearfully dared to look down whilst riding a flying horse into the sky. No one can touch on the feelings of tenderness in the way Dan did between Jack and his love Lucia.

Also the cover of this book is stunning and the quality of print on cream paper is excellent. If you only buy one paperback this year, I would highly recommend that you buy The Black Petal; it’s a modern classic that you will be able to enjoy time and time again.

TRUST ME is well-written, has a great pace as the mystery unfolds, and has characters that bring the reader into the story. Monks had enjoyed a long association with tea in South China, but it was not until Lu Yu's compilation of the Chajing (The Classic of Tea) and the spread of tea drinking by itinerant Chan monastics that tea culture became popular throughout the empire and beyond.

Tea was important for maintaining long periods of meditation; it also provided inspiration for poets and profoundly affected the ways in which ideas were exchanged. Prior to the eighth century, the aristocratic drinking party had excluded monks from participating in elite culture. Over cups of tea, however, monks and literati could meet on equal footing and share in the same aesthetic values. Monks and scholars thus found common ground in the popular stimulant—one with few side effects that was easily obtainable and provided inspiration and energy for composing poetry and meditating. In addition, rituals associated with tea drinking were developed in Chan monasteries, aiding in the transformation of China's sacred landscape at the popular and elite level. Pilgrimages to monasteries that grew their own tea were essential in the spread of tea culture, and some monasteries owned vast tea plantations. By the end of the ninth century, tea was a vital component in the Chinese economy and in everyday life.

Tea in China transcends the boundaries of religious studies and cultural history as it draws on a broad range of materials—poetry, histories, liturgical texts, monastic regulations—many translated or analyzed for the first time. The book will be of interest to scholars of East Asia and all those concerned with the religious dimensions of commodity culture in the premodern world.

A brillant and refreshingly well researched book

James Benn has written a scholarly masterpiece which has earned a prominent place of honour among my exhaustive collection of tea books. Dispensing with the usual (and quite sad) tendency to repeat the tired myths about tea as if they were absolute truths, he has dug down deep into the sources and refreshingly returned with clarity and eruditness to not only dispel the false, but more so, to paint a new picture of the evolution of tea and tea culture in China. This is a very valuable book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Tea in Old China

I can only agree 100% with Matthew London's review (the only other one so far). This is a major work. It covers tea in China from the beginning through the Ming Dynasty; it is best on Tang and Song. It draws on a vast range of Chinese sources, almost none of them previously mined in any detail by western writers. It does indeed, as London says, avoid the tired myths; it breaks new ground and provides us new translations throughout. Benn shows that tea was closely associated with Buddhism from the beginning through Song. He provides details on differing ways of brewing the stuff over the centuries. He has some fun with the incredible lengths of tea connoisseurship, which resemble wine snobbery today. For anyone interested in tea, or in the history of Chinese consumption, this is an indispensable book.
