A history of treachery, heroism, and manliness during the decline of the Roman republic which, dark in its outlook, strangely parallels our dealings with the Middle East and terrorism! The speeches from the different parties alone make this volume worth a read. I should also like to add that, while Batstone's English translation is very readable, I suspect that Sallust is probably more satisfying to read in the original Latin. In English, Sallust comes off as a curious writer. His inability to concentrate on his subject leads to unclear passages, narrative meandering, factual inaccuracies, and occasional emotional tangents in the rhetoric. Yes, his dramatic presentation makes for exciting patches, but Sallust doesn't make it easy, throwing in strange words (cock-a-hoop) and ineffective rambling when a clear exposition would've more aptly illustrated the subject.

The story is well written and nicely thought out and the characters are well developed.

Best kind of 'free use' fiction I have read

An amazing world in which nobody questions a school's requirement for girls to engage in continuous anal sex for the benefit of the rest of the campus.
I enjoyed how even the women getting severe anal abuse just treated it as another part of life, seemingly harboring no ill will and just having a general "oh well, I don't want to break the rules" attitude.
Would have loved to see more of the women get a bitter tasting ass to mouth, having them just accept it as an annoyance.
Absolutely recommended read, and I recommend reading the previous and new series by the author as well.

The author created a very interesting alternative reality where sexual intercourse makes men and women better students. We follow around a nice variety of women during a week of only anal sex. No chapter is like the one before and the author has great ideas in every chapter.

Same old

Did I even read the same book as all these people? I wouldn't say it was terrible as I have read worse books but I certainly wouldn't say it was worth the five stars that many have given. The story line is so old. The girl has been in love with her best friend forever, he goes away for a while, she gets lonely and hooks up with someone else and naked pictures or some sordid video is released blah blah blah.
I honestly don't get how some characters are written. I did not like the girl, I can't even remember her name, she is that unforgettable. I like that she managed to get stronger after the bullying, but I still didn't like her. The only redeeming quality of this book was Daltrey. I did like him

Young Adult read

While written nicely this story dragged on endlessly. It should be marketed as Yound Adult. The hero and heroine are 19 and the writer has done an excellent job keeping their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors at that cusp of adulthood. I found it unsatisfying that the adults in the story are protagonists who have "done wrong" to the lead couple, who again are immature and rely on others to make life decisions for them. I would not be interested in reading a follow-up to this story.

Low-angst, sweet and emotional

Daltrey and Daisy have been best friends since they were five, and have both harbored feelings for each other for years. After not speaking for a year (in which Daltrey gets a recording contract and major fame), they see each other again, and this is when the majority of the story takes place.

This is a romance, but it's also a story about bullying. Daisy went through a lot of ugly stuff while Daltrey was becoming famous. She didn't tell Daltrey about what was happening, not wanting to ruin his chances at success. It was easy to sympathize with Daisy, and she really got a lot stronger throughout the story.

This was a pretty low-angst read. Both Daltrey and Daisy were able to talk things out for the most part like adults. It was other people believing they had the best interests of Daltrey/Daisy that caused the problems. Daltrey managed to be a rock star without being a manwhore, which I liked. Daltrey's dad was a piece of work, him I wanted to punch.

Attractively packaged and indisputably useful

This attractively-packaged collection is by no means nonpartisan. Editor Nicholas Cafardi and most of his contributors are publicly-recognized activists within the leadership of "Catholics for Obama". Several are listed by name as members of the campaign team at barackobama.com.

My central concern is that this book is --- without openly admitting it --- Obama campaign literature.

In their respective chapters,

* Lisa Sowle Cahill opposes the protection of human rights for the unborn as an electoral priority;

* William D'Antonio argues against the bishops' efforts to support pro-life and pro- religious liberty legislation;

* Richard Gaillardetz asserts that Catholic can vote for candidates who support abortion, so long as their policies align with the common good.

* M. Cathleen Caveney argues that intrinsically evil acts may not be gravely evil;

* Bryan Massingale deplores the bishops' comparison of abortion with slavery, since--- he claims--- the "personhood" of slaves and unborn babies was not historically, and is not now, the relevant issue.

* Vincent Miller urges Catholics can "pursue the common good" while accepting cooperation with evil;

* Maureen O'Connell sees it as "antiquated Catholic theology" to focus upon personal salvation, prohibitive admonition, and avoidance of evil;

* Stephen Schneck --- the co-chair of "Catholics for Obama"--- opposes Abp Charles Chaput's call for the indivisibility of Catholic truth in the public square.

The promotion of the "Catholics for Obama" perspective ---like an election-year promotion planted by, say, the Romney/Ryan team --- shows poor judgment on the part of Paulist Press.

It will, however, serve as a good example of the usefulness of academics in the production and distribution of moral equivocation. This is always necessary for the eradication of scruples and the consolidation of the power of the state.

Formal Cooperation?

The Cathechism of the Catholic Church expressly states that "Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication of this crime against human life".(CCC#2272). Voting for a pro-abortion candidate makes the voter complicit in the act of abortion through the laws that sanction it. It is not the only issue in an election, but it represents the most basic of human rights. What other right supercedes that? A Catholic can never vote for a candidate that espouses the destruction of human life and the legal recognition of homosexual unions. If Catholics voted with their informed consciences, we would not be looking at candidates that represent intrinsic evil. They simply would never get the Catholic vote. The writers do not represent the true teachings of the Catholic Church. My question to them is, why do they remain in the church that teaches what they do not believe. The world is full of other sects that dissented from Catholic teaching.

True Catholics already know how to vote

The book description mentions that election season is the time when "political campaigners attempt to exploit the Catholic conscience in order to achieve victory at the polling booth." That is exactly what this book is doing, though the authors would say that others are the political campaigners. But the issues are so clear that there shouldn't be any need for campaigning to Catholics. If you want to know what the Catholic Church believes and teaches, read the Catechism of the Catholic Church. If you believe, teach, or practice something else, you are not Catholic. If all Catholics knew and practiced their own faith, none would be deceived by such a book a this. It is disingenuous (to say the least) to publish a book by Obama supporters directed toward Catholics, whose faith clearly indicates that several causes he champions are evil, to show how voting for him somehow indicates their "holiness." We seem to have fully entered here into the world of Orwellian double-speak, at the peril of both individual souls and our society as a whole.

Bad translation

I think that there is a good balance between text and images, and the images are of high quality. However, this book and other Taschen books that I have read suffer from poor translation. I work in translation and it appears to me that they did not use a native English speaker to translate from the German, as there are quite a few clunky sentences.

Adequate though flawed

I found this book to be a decent, though flawed, introduction to the topic of German Expressionism: The text is engaging, it covers a wide range of German Expressionist painters and groups, and there are many good color reproductions. This being said I have to agree with most of the other reviewers in saying that the editing and translation is rather poor for a book in wide circulation. The author/translator repeats several phrases and terms adnauseam (e.g. "chosen partner"), some of the sentences are awkward and badly constructed, and there are a few editing errors such as on page 127 when the text refers to Gauguin being born in 1853 when it should be Van Gogh. Despite these negative elements the book is still a worthwhile read as it does address such an interesting topic and does a fine job in covering such a large amount of territory

good art, bad editing

Great book, good illustrations. Some of the chapters are very badly edited, however. One repeats the phrase "his illness, from which he never recovered" four times in a short chapter. More typically, they end abruptly with no proper conclusion, as if chopped so as not to exceed space limitations. The writing/editing is the disappointing weak point here. Other times, terms are dropped or events referenced that have not yet been explained in the text. As an art book, the strength of the art can carry it. But it's a shame that it had to be this way.
