Handy Reference Helpful in my Doctoral Studies

This book serves as a handy reference for my Doctoral Research Studies courses at Brandman University. It was required reading, but I can't bring myself to give it a straight readthrough. I am disappointed that this title is not available in any edition on Kindle. I am happy to report however that this edition (the 7th) is working out just fine for me, even though the course requested we purchase the 8th edition. My classmates have the 8th edition and we have not noticed any difference between our books thus far. With that said, check with your instructor and see if you can purchase the 7th edition used like I did to save some money.

The text gives a nice overview of both qualitative and quantitative research methods, experimental and non-experimental designs. Key terms are fully explained. There are a few key pages I continue to refer back to. I have these marked with post its. I usually purchase all of my books through the Kindle store, but owning this edition is working out for me thus far.

This is a great resource if you have to do research. It is an easy read yet it is thorough. This book takes you step by step through the process and reinforces what you learn in each chapter as you read the new chapter. Glad I got it.

Great for lovers of Ancient Rome

As a historical novelist, I found this book a great source of contemporary comments about various sites in the ancient city. Where else would you find out that Agrippa originally wanted to name the Pantheon for Augustus, but Augustus declined? If you're planning to visit and/or write about ancient Rome, Rome Alive and the Oxford Archaeological Guide to Rome make an excellent pair of guidebooks.

Being not only a teacher of Ancient Roman History, but also an avid tourist of the eternal city, I found this book highly readable and very practical. It is a valuable resource for the teacher, student and adventurer all in one volume. This book is a must for anyone who intends more than a cursory few hours in Rome, not on a tourist bus, but by navigating the winding streets of Rome with a bottle of water, a good pair of walking shoes and this book as your guide. This book really brings the marble glories of Republican and Imperial Rome back to life. It is also a must for the student and teacher as the author has collected a dazzling array of ancient sources on a myriad of important structures that have contributed to the western psyche of what Rome was like.

My review of Dead Island: Operation Zulu

This story takes place on an island that is still in throws of a biological outbreak that occurred worldwide ten years earlier. There are warring factions represented such as a two separate military contractors that are sent to the island to retrieve a vaccine or cure that a team of scientists have supposedly developed. I believe Mr. Gamboa successfully demonstrated the differences through the deeds and actions of both teams that there is a difference between mercenaries and soldiers of fortune. The reader should be able to tell the differences easily the farther they read into the action filled story. The zombies are mostly slow shamblers reminiscent of the TV show walking dead while still including the occasional runner or fast mover like the infected characters in the movie 28 days. Of course I felt the relatable American/Australian team to be more likable and appealing compared to the Russian mercenary team. The story was fast paced and I read it in just over twenty four hours. I can only think of an insanely built rollercoaster with the twists and turns that make up an imaginative thrill ride while I read each chapter. The in depth characters were all enjoyable to read, even the most evil soldiers that made up the blood thirsty and low moral Russian mercenary team. The social byplay that the many characters were constantly displaying reminded a lot of the recent Expendable movies. So action galore, well written characters and a vivid description of scenery were all equally represented. I’m looking forward to the next installment by Allen Gamboa.

A very good read. be sure you don't pass this one up.

What a great read. First let me say that this was a free copy but that in no way influences my review . This is a book with great characters , a good plot , lots of zombies and it keeps you wanting to read the next page no matter how tired you are. I am really looking forward to seeing what Mr Gamboa writes next. This is a stand alone book with a great ending . I highly recommend this book .

What a fun read, action adventure blood and guts, this reads like a bad ass 80's movie. I really enjoyed it and looking forward to more adventures from Allen Gamboa.

Conflict transformation: crisis intervention and long-term radical strategy integrated into peacebuilding

One of Lederach's most useful revelations in assessing the work of third-party nonviolent interventionists -- from humanitarian workers to nonviolent direct-action trainers -- is the idea of an integrated framework for peacebuilding. Instead of always focusing on either crisis intervention or a future-to-come; instead of focusing on either a local issue or only visioning about addressing root causes, Lederach explores the role of transformation -- how to get from crises to radical change.

"We must ... think about the design of social change in time-units of decades, in order to link crisis management and long-term, future-oriented time frames," he writes. "We must understand crisis issues as connected to systemic roots ... [and] recognize the integrative potential of middle-range leaders, who by their locus within the affected population may be able to cultivate relationships and pursue the design of social change at a subsystem level."

Truly cutting-edge

Lederach's work stands at the forefront of the emergent field of conflict transformation study. A professor at Eastern Mennonnite University, he also has extensive field experience. In "Building Peace", he focuses upon the necessity of constructing relationships across multiple social levels, de-emphasizing the role of political elites, and instead focusing both upon mid-level elites (bureaucrats, intellectuals, "influential" persons) and grassroots-level activism. He also stresses the need to develop long-range objectives, to delink expectations of short-term results from questions of involvement, and the need for implementation of training programmes to create what might be termed a "culture of peace" within the society: trained mediators indigenous to the society. In doing this, the hope is that the "parachute" problem of credibility (the idea that mediators are dropped from the above---IGO/foreign gouvernment, etc---and have no particular attachment to the conflict) may be reduced, and transformation of the conflict may be initiated.
Lederach's work is exceptionally lucid, and he draws upon a smorgasbord of substantive examples. Highly recommended.

Wonderful PreK-2 Approach to Math

Last year, I took a continuing ed course and this book was a part of the curriculum. I am a homeschool mom who was formerly a classroom teacher. But, I taught middle school not early elementary. At first, because I didn't have a lot of experience with this age, I didn't know how effective the activities in this book would be. But, after using it for a year, I would enthusiastically recommend it to both classroom teachers and homeschool teachers! It is a wonderful approach to helping young students really grasp and understand math--not just learn wrote mathematics. One of the things I love most about this book is how she clearly identifies what children need to learn, conceptually, in order to truly learn how to count, understand patterns, and grasp more/less. What's also wonderful is how little prep the activities in the book take! They are so easy to prep for! As a homeschool mom of a 4 year old and 2 year old with one on the way, my time is already stretched. But, this book allows me to do interactive lessons with my daughters (and modify them for my 2 year old) with very little prep involved.

I'm an elementary school teacher and since I've purchased this book, I've used it countless times to develop lesson plans! Kathy Richardson is a master at creating activities that invite children to gain a true understanding of math concepts through investigation. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone who teaches math to young children. Parents could also do these simple activities at home with their children. Excellent investment!

What Just Happened?

As a die hard Christie fan, and loving the previous four T&T books, I felt I had to slog through and finish this one, and although the whodunnit is answered after a fashion, I still don't know whydunnit. Christie wrote this one as an aged writer and it shows, with the main characters, themselves in their seventies, prattling on about nothing interesting or germane, and "witness" characters sounding like a visit with an aged relative who talks about people you have never met and they can't seem to quite remember. Although in the end we do find out who did the actual dastardly deed(s), it doesn't seem to matter; I won't type out a spoiler here as far as motive, suffice it to say it was very unsatisfying and confusing. Perhaps an English reader would get more out of it as there are references to what I think are actual historical events that happened in England, but I can only guess. If you are a fan of T&T by all means read this one as it is the last, but for all other Christie readers I say skip it.

My Favorite Agatha Christie -- Believe it or not

I was surprised to see how unliked Postern of Fate is rated. It happens to be my favorite Agatha Christie book. I am a great book reader and a long-time aspiring retiree. Walking in the idyllic Diablo neighborhood of Contra Costa County, I listened to Postern of Fate -- where a retired couple retire to a country old house in England, and saw them moving into the type of picturesque neighborhood where I walked. The endless discussion of the lady going through boxes of books and the thrills of her memories of different titles entranced me. I love their dog and their relationship to the dog. I wished this old couple encountered a few more adventures in their scenic village. The earlier books about Tommy and Tuppence didn't interest me as much. You can probably guess that I adored Miss Marple and, as I marched to my daily round of paperwork, I loved to escape to her world of a small village, gardening, walking, knitting, reading and an adventure or two.

For every publishing house putting out her works, there seem to be a new batch of editors altering Agatha Christie's words and the sound of her voice. What's the matter with these publishers? Whose voice do they think we want to hear when we sit down to a novel by Agatha Christie? And what will she sound like twenty years from now? It's frightening that her estate has failed to see the importance of guarding her words as she wrote them. Please tell me I'm not the only one here who senses that a crime has been committed.
