I love this book

I've set myself two language-related tasks for this year. One is to brush up on my long-ignored French, and the other is to learn a new language (Swedish). Once you begin to get a handle on some basics, one of the best ways to learn is to read children's books in your chosen language. They're not just designed to entertain, not at all. Through the use of pictures and repetition of basic words and phrases, children's books teach spelling, grammar and idiomatic usage. They will guide the reader gently through new vocabulary by putting the words into simple context.

"Am I Small?" is a delightful book written both in Swedish and English, so there's never any question about whether you've gotten the right idea or not. But the repetition of Tamia's question, "Am I small?" and the various answers she receives go a long way to teaching basic language concepts. And in the end, Tamia's conclusion is exactly right, and a valuable lesson

The illustrations are just charming, and make this book even more memorable. If you plan on learning Swedish, give this book a place on your e-reader. If you know a child who is learning either English or Swedish -- the dual language text will work both ways -- this is a wonderful gift.

Just wow for en EE textbook

As a 3rd year electrical engineering student I can confidently say this is the best textbook I have used and its only the 3rd week of the semester. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone even if they are not taking a course that requires this text. The quality of this book is apparent and I will enjoy reading it all semester long.

The best Textbook I'll ever read

This is by far the best EE textbook I have ever had to read. It was actually enjoyable and to the point. The book has smooth transitions and the examples are in sync with what is being read. Would recommend to anyone interested in learning about electric energy.

Good book but-

I found this book very easy to read and understand the written word. I found most of the written material more basic in form than I expected understanding that this book was an "introduction" to. I enjoyed very much reading about Nickola Tesla as he is the greatest inventor of all times, in my mind, mainly due to his inventing AC power.

My disappointment came in all the math and formula which offered the bulk of explanatoin. Those interested in heavy math and formula would enjoy this book very much.

Dr. Kuniaki Otsuka obtained PhD degree in Division of Medicine, Kyusyu University Graduate School, Japan in 1981.He started his carrier as an assistant Professor at Kyusyu University in 1973.He moved to Tokyo woman’s medical School as a lecturer in 1987 and promoted to full Professor in 1998. He started his research on Chronobiology in 1987, supervised by Dr. Halberg at Minnesota University. He is one of the top researcher in this field, as he received Halberg Prize at 3rd International Workshop on Circadian Rhythms&Clinical Chrono therapy in 2002 and he organized 2nd World Congress of Chronobiology as an president in 2007.

Good Reference manual, not textbook

First of all, as the name indicates, this book is a handbook. Merriam Webster defines a handbook as "a concise reference book; manual"

For a manual, I have to give this book high marks - it covers a whole gamut of topics / competencies - enough to assist those who consciously want to improve their professional and leadership skills. The language is easy to understand. The only prerequisite is to be in a work-place for a few years so as to appreciate each competency.

Pros:
(1) Compendium of competencies. Most likely, nothing has been missed!
(2) A person who is keen on gaining skill in a particular competency such as "Manage Change" or "Establish Trust" can quickly gather insights into what behaviors and skills he/she must practice or develop.
(3) Easy to understand.

Cons:
(1) No pictures or maps or schematics shown.
(2) No case studies or examples presented.
(3) Not concise. For example, there are 28 chapters in the seventh edition (2004). At a high level, one should be able to identify less than ten key competencies, with each having additional sub-topics. For example, it is easier on the reader to have one chapter on "Foster open Communication" with sub sections of "Write effectively", "Listen attentively", "speak with Impact", etc. rather than have a chapter each. A person solely relying on this book will have difficulty summarizing key leadership qualities. (Imagine organizing 28 chapters in the mind!).
(4) Systematic methodology for skill development not presented.

All this makes for dry reading. But then, if you look upon this book as a reference manual and not as a textbook, you might develop some compassion for the authors!

Here is how I used this book:
(1) Start a personal development plan (consult web, books or leader).
(2) Understand the competencies required for your profession.
(3) Self-assess on the competencies, assigning a skill level of "Development," "Working," or "Advanced".
(4) Have a competent leader who knows you (e.g. your manager) assess your skills. Compare notes.
(5) Pick the top 2-3 competencies where improvement is needed.
(6) Refer to those chapters in this book which correspond to these identified competencies.
(7) Summarize these chapters in your own words as you develop insights.
(8) Periodically look up summary and use these techniques during your waking hours - home or work - until they are internalized.
(9) Repeat this exercise once in 2-3 years.

In summary, this book is a good reference manual for improving one's professional skills, but should not be used as a text book.

Excellent content, very dry style

The content of the book is excellent. The authors have created a compendium of the knowledge and behaviors needed for a manager to be successful. One would be hard-pressed to find this much of content in one volume, at the price this book is sold at.

The bad news is that all of the content is in endless streams of paragraphs or bullet points. The total absence of a change in pace (no anecdotes, case studies, sidebars, pictures) makes this a very dry read. The book could be significantly enlivened by the addition of more diagrams that visually illustrate the principles being described.

To make the best use of this material, learn to Mind Map (see Buzan's The Mind Mapping book). As you read through the material, distill the content into mind maps. Continually refer to those mind maps as you practice the behaviors suggested by the authors.

In summary, the content is first-rate, the presentation is lacking.

I laughed throughout the reading of the book. A real feel good fiction story. Makes you think "what if". The author makes the characters of the book come alive. Big D, Mikey & Ricardo are typical weekend bikers experiencing the adventure and joy of riding motorcycles. Every ride is an adventure with a story to tell. The author's writing style makes you feel like you are actually experiencing the adventure. As you read the book you can't wait to see what happens next. When I sat down to read the book my plan was to read a few chapters and go to bed. Two hours later I finished the book. I could not put it down.

Good read. Characters are well developed. . Heven, Alabama is like a hundred small towns in the backwoods of that state, except that this town has a bunch of definitely different characters. I especially enjoyed that I thought I had the ending figured out, but was surprised that the story did not end as I thought it would. If you want to read an adventure story with many different twists, you will definitely enjoy this one.

If you like motorcycles, music from the 70's, classic sarcasm and a sharp wit - it is the adventure for you. A great quick read full of adventure and althought the work is fiction, it constantly keeps you guessing about whether it could be non-fiction. I laughed, snorted a few times and stayed up way too late reading it just to find out if it was "true" Check it out; you won't be dissappointed.

Yet despite a 1988 retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art and a huge influence on a younger generation of art photographers, he remains underappreciated by the general public. Hopefully, this lavish publication, concentrating on his most important body of work, the street scenes, will begin to change that. Winogrand took the workaday street tableau and revealed there an intensity and humanity as clear as in any image in a museum. Not Bad For A Million Rolls of Film!

Gary Winogrand was the type of photographer who had a very itchy camera trigger finger. When he died he left behind around 10,000 rolls of undeveloped film. If it moved he photographed it. Did he shoot so many good pictures simply because he took such an unbelievably large number of them, i.e. if you take a million shots aren't you bound statistically to get at least a thousand good ones? Good question, yet GW is one of my favorite people. If you like street photography with insight and humor he is almost unbeatable. These are candid portraits that catch people gawking, staring, laughing, having fun, showing pain, and often being oblivious to everything around them. Gary was not shy; he thrust his camera right into people's faces, and caught them in off guard moments. A man crawls along a sidewalk unnoticed by a group of American Legionnaires. Another man walks nude through a crowd without attracting much attention at all. Another man walks through a crowd carrying an immense poster of the Beatles. Why is he doing this; where is he going? A man with a bandaged nose stares strangely at his female passenger as he drives along. Is he angry with her or is he perhaps lusting after her. You decide.
It takes you forever to get through this book as you sit and look at each picture for a long, long time. How revealing are the faces, the postures, and the gestures; each shot prompts you to weave a story around the captured event. Winogrand seems to be made up of equal portions of Elliott Erwitt, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Diane Arbus, and Andre Kertesz (if you are unfamiliar with any of these folks, and you like Winogrand, you had better check them out). The saddest thing is that almost all of Winogrand's books are out of print. This is a breathtaking collection of his work.

A great insight into candid photography.

I am a street photographer existing in my own vacuum until I found the book Facing New York by Bruce Gilden and now this work by Garry Winogrand. I love the genre, the theft of a slice of life as it occurs on our streets. Reality ends up being the perfect casting director for a visual of modern America. Winogrand's work is beautiful in its simplicity and I realize my goal is to follow in his path. A very important photographer for me.

Very Real

This book is worth reading by every person loving cities, not just photograph-lovers. A book so real, you feel you are walking through a cith while flipping the pages!
