A Profound Look at What Matters Most

This short Essay by Thoreau is weightier than most philosophical pieces ten times its size. Thoreau detects a significant lack of principle among most in Western society, and his observations are as applicable today as when he wrote them.

As a naturalist Thoreau enabled himself to step outside the norms of society to gather insight not easily attained, and as a result produced some exceptionally compelling ideas. He discovered the things most people prioritize to be far too trivial and endangering to living a truly virtuous life. Put best by Thoreau himself, "We should treat our minds, that is, ourselves, as innocent and ingenious children, whose guardians we are and be careful what objects and what subjects we thrust on their attention."

Thoreau sheds light on the sad notion that society generally puts too much emphasis on enterprise; suggesting it merely represents a means to an end and has resulted in a lack of focus on what is truly important, life itself. Thoreau explains, "If a man walk in the woods for love of them half each day, he is in danger of being regarded as a loafer; but if he spends his whole day as a speculator, shearing off those woods and making earth bald before her time, he is esteemed as an industrious and enterprising fellow." He further emphasized this ideal with a profound principle: "Don't cheat yourself by working primarily for a paycheck. If what you do with your life free-of-charge is so worthless to you that you'd be convinced to do something else in exchange for little money or fame, you need better hobbies." In less refined terms, he is merely observing that your life is made up of a fixed amount of time, and if the bulk of that is merely to support a meager remaining amount, something is amiss; an ideal that merits consideration.

I highly recommend this short book to anyone willing and ready to test their own priorities. Life Without Principle will unquestionably lead you to the bedrock of your values.

Essay=5 Stars, Edition=1

"Life without Principle" is not Henry David Thoreau's most famous or influential work, but many Thoreauvians, including me, think it his best. The essay is truly remarkable in that it has a wealth of thought-provoking ideas despite the brevity; it is far shorter than Walden but may even have more food for proverbial thought. The words are few but the implications endless; without exaggeration, there is enough to keep one invigorated for life. Indeed the subject is life itself - not in the philosophical but in the everyday sense. Thoreau writes about how people live their daily lives, specifically how they earn a living. He is highly critical of the American wage system of drudgery and capitalism generally; many conservatives claim Thoreau today - not without reason -, but this vividly shows that he was far from is now conservative and in fact very much his own man. As ever, he gives his views without apology even though they are far from mainstream. I will not try to reproduce his arguments; his mesmerizing persuasiveness and sublime prose style simply cannot be paraphrased. Suffice it to say that I have read thousands of works, but this is the most thought-provoking and challenging; nothing else has made me so deeply question and challenge my most fundamental beliefs. I can honestly say that this is one of only a handful or fewer of works that literally changed my life. Thoreau's greatness always shines through, but reading him at the right time can make an astonishing difference. I was lucky to read him at just the right time, and "Life" spoke to me more powerfully than almost anything else ever has. Without hyperbole, I can say that I would not be doing what I am today and would have abandoned my goals and visions without reading this and Emerson's "Self-Reliance" when I did. I was wracked with self-doubt and getting nothing but indifference, bafflement, or hostility; these works gave just the kick I needed, and I will never look back. "Life" has the potential to be life-changing as almost nothing else does, and I highly recommend it to all; you can hardly be unaffected and may never be the same. However, I especially recommend it to the young; its importance to them - and Thoreau's generally - simply cannot be overemphasized. Socrates long ago said that an unexamined life is not worth living; probably no subsequent Westerner has known it better than Thoreau, and his works have much to teach us. His more famous pieces may be a better introduction, but anyone at all interested in him should make this one of his or her first stops. It is well worth buying alone, but the fact that it is widely anthologized makes a standalone very hard to justify. The important thing in any event is to read it in some form.

Bad formatting of text. And not Thoreau's best either.

The conversion from paper to digital has put a hard return after every line. So the essay looks like a poem, with a paragraph every 10 words or so.

Besides, Thoreau's presents a sophomoric thesis, which boils down roughly to this: "Commerce and politics - and even interest in commerce and politics - are soulless and debasing activities that dehumanize almost everyone." I write this as an admirer of Thoreau. He is a great stylist and thinker in other realms, but he has given little thought to problems of economics, scarcity, or poverty. Worse, and ironically, he puts a cramped view of human inspiration on display in this essay.

About the Author

Pankaj Jain obtained his doctoral degree from Syracuse University, New York, USA. He subsequently carried out postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA; West Virginia University, Morgantown, USA; University of Kansas, Lawrence, USA; and University of Oklahoma, Norman, USA. Dr. Jain is currently a professor in the Physics Department at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He is a theoretical physicist, whose chief interests are in high energy physics and cosmology. Presently, he is working on the models of dark energy and dark matter, cosmic microwave background radiation, observational tests of the cosmological principle, fundamental symmetries of nature, ultra-high energy cosmic rays, and strong interactions.

About the Author

William J. Chambliss, professor of sociology at The George Washington University, was a critical sociological theorist whose research has ranged broadly from studies of law creation and the legal system to participant observation studies of juvenile gangs, organized crime, policing, and the impact of social movements on political and economic change. He served as president of the American Society of Criminology and the Society for the Study of Social Problems. He has received numerous awards for his research and teaching, including the prestigious Edwin H. Sutherland Award from the American Society of Criminology, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Sociological Association, the Bruce Smith Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the PASS Award from the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sociology of Law Section of the American Sociological Association. He has authored and edited over 35 books in sociology, criminology and criminal justice and numerous articles in social science journals.

Daina S. Eglitis is an associate professor of sociology and international affairs and director of the undergraduate program in the Department of Sociology at The George Washington University. Her research highlights sociological dimensions of change in the post-communist world, with a particular focus on stratification, poverty, and gender. She has been the recipient of Fulbright, IREX, and Open Society awards and is the author of several articles and a book on post-communist social change. She also writes for and about teaching in the undergraduate classroom and is the author of the article, “The Uses of Global Poverty: How Inequality Benefits the West,” and the Teaching Sociology article, “Performing Theory: Dramatic Learning in the Theory Classroom.”
