Broken Hearts and Broken Minds

The SF author Barry N. Malzberg described "Clans of the Alphane Moon" as a perfectly typical Philip K. Dick work. I'm inclined to agree; for better or worse, "Clans" has almost everything we anticipate from this author.

It takes place at an abandoned mental hospital colony on a small moon. The ex-patients and their progeny have divided themselves into separate but interdependent groups according to their complaints - paranoia, hebephrenia, depression, mania, obsessive-compulsive disorder, delusional and polymorphous schizophrenias. Representatives from each clan meet regularly to discuss matters of importance, including the sudden arrival of a psychiatric team from Earth. The clans, mentally ill as they seem to be, must decide how to respond to this new circumstance. PKD may have been one of the first to let the lunatics take over the asylum and then form a government.

The novel, like much of PKD's work, also deals with the sadness that sometimes comes with human relationships. Mary Rittersdorf (PKD was a whiz at character names) gets an offer to join the psychiatric team going to the asylum moon. So she divorces her husband Chuck, takes him for everything he's got, and moves away, all to fulfill her career ambitions. Chuck is furious, to the point of suicide, then homicide. Eventually, both Rittersdorfs end up on the moon. This being an astronomical body full of mental patients, and in a PKD novel at that, things don't work out quite the way either one them expects.

"Clans" includes some standard PKD aliens as well. The Rittersdorfs and the people of the moon come to the attention of, among the various non-Terrans in evidence, a sentient slime mold named Lord Running Clam (I told you PKD was a whiz at character names). This being's behavior is that of a slightly innocent Himalayan guru. His power is anything but.

PKD's books often questioned how we perceive reality, and this novel is no exception. Do we ever perceive the truth? How can we learn the truth? Is there even any advantage to doing so? Some of the novels, like "Eye in the Sky", deal with these questions directly - they suggest, for instance, that the world is really someone else's delusion. Here, the issues are more subtle, which is not surprising. After all, most of the story takes place on a planet full of people whose grip on reality is tenuous at best. Then again, if the whole planet experiences reality as fluid, are the Rittersdorfs so sure they're wrong?

And there's also the multiple interweaving plotlines, the sense of vast conspiracy victimizing the working man, the slightly clunky but generally convincing dialogue, the idea that empathy will save the world - about the only classic PKD theme missing from this novel is the use of psychoactive drugs. Then again, a lot of these characters have a problematic relationship with reality when clean and sober. And I'm not talking only about the former inmates.

All right, it's true - "Clans of the Alphane Moon" is the pure expression of PKD's mid-1960s style, or close enough so the seams don't show. What does that tell us?

For one thing, it tells us something about his attitude toward women (God knows how I missed that in all my previous reviews). The women in PKD's work can have many good qualities, but generally they don't seem truly human or humane unless they have some man to look after. In extreme cases, these women need a man to just plain control them. Mary Rittersdorf may be the worst of the bunch as the novel opens. She's a hard, mercenary, castrating harpy, who thinks she's being sane and rational. The revelation at the end regarding her mental state is no excuse. PKD was married five times and had his troubles in and out of relationships, and no wonder, if "Clans" is really typical of him,.

One of the tragedies of PKD's life was that he failed at a cherished ambition - to make a career as a writer of both mainstream and science fiction. Nevertheless, like a lot of things, this may have been a blessing in disguise, and "Clans" illustrates the point. Since PKD was not allowed to publish both mainstream and science fiction, he was forced to combine them. This led him to fashion something extremely powerful both in "Clans" and elsewhere.

Some have suggested that PKD used SF material to avoid a painful examination of the life issues he raised. As far as I'm concerned, "Clans" allows those issues room to breathe that they'd never get in mainstream fiction. Ask yourself this question - do you really want to read another novel about a couple at each other's throats in middle-class suburbia? You know all about that story already, not only from books but from down the block. Well, what about the same story on a planetwide insane asylum at war? Not only is that new and different, but with that backdrop the characters have to deal with the issues, rather than avoiding them in the swirl of daily life. Escapist literature, my foot - SF like this is in some ways the most realistic of all.

Finally, as in all but a very few of PKD's books, "Clans" concludes with a message of hope. Let's face it, in a novel where almost every character suffers from some mental malformation, anything short of total annihilation is remarkable. When, as here, the characters manage to survive, thrive, and even care for each other, it's more like a miracle, fictional though it may be.

That's sort of the main point right there. PKD spent years without intimate relationships, underappreciated, lacking in means of support, and maybe even mentally unbalanced, yet he insisted on ending his most typical work with hope. Maybe this is why so much of his work is so moving - his characters act like dizzy fools, but eventually they try to love each other. That's just what happens here. Right on.

A very clever book

A very good friend in Berlin gave me an early German translation of this book (there have been several, apparently) after I got out of a psychiatric clinic where I had spent two months dealing with a very bad depression. Reading it helped me to be able to laugh at myself and at my condition, and laughter is good for healing. After I had given that book to a bipolar friend, I found a new friend with angst issues, so I decided to get a copy for him and a new one for myself.

SF NOVELS OPUS TWELVE

Years before computers could create virtual realities by dozens, Philip K. Dick, by the sole power of his words, was describing books after books virtual mental universes that were a lot more frightful than those our beloved techno-directors try vainly to shape nowadays. Among the four novels he published in 1964, MARTIAN TIME-SLIP and CLANS OF THE ALPHANE MOON were treating this Dickian theme by essence.
After an interstellar war that ended 15 years ago, the world has forgotten this alphane moon and its inhabitants. Alpha III was considered as a giant hospital for mentally ill people by the Earth; now maniaco-depressives, schizophrenics and obsessive have founded cities and try to leave peacefully. But Alphans and Earth want to retake possession of this forgotten moon for obscure political reasons.
If you liked EYE IN THE SKY, a novel published 7 years before by PKD, you will appreciate CLANS OF THE ALPHANE MOON and its numerous points of views. The same events are described and analyzed by the different characters and one is lead to understand very soon that there is no objectiveness in Reality and that the actions of so-called sane people often obey to rather perverse motivations. Anyway, if you're a Philip K. Dick fan, you already know by now that there is no such thing as Reality !

About the Author
Terryl Whitlatch is an accomplished, scientific and academically trained illustrator who extensively studied vertebrate zoology and animal anatomy. She has worked for various zoos and museums in the US and The World Wildlife Fund as Senior consultant for Wildlife Art and Animal Anatomy. She is considered to be one of the top creature designers and animal anatomists working in the field today

In a career spanning over 25 years, Terryl has many projects to her credit, including Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: The Special Edition, Jumanji 1 and 2, Men in Black, Brother Bear, Dragonheart, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Curious George, The Polar Express, and Beowulf. For over seven years, Terryl worked for Lucasfilm Ltd., Industrial Light & Magic and George Lucas' JAK Films. Her unique combination of illustration skills and comprehensive knowledge of animal anatomy and movement are essential components in the design, anatomy and physical animation aspects of believable creature creation.

In her work on Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, she worked directly with George Lucas for whom she designed countless creatures for the films and related products, including CD-ROMs. A collection of her work for Lucasfilm, The Wildlife of Star Wars: A Field Guide was published by Chronicle Books in 2001 to critical acclaim and popular success. Terryl also designed for many electronic and interactive games for leading publishers including Steven's Spielberg's The Dig, for LucasArts.

Terryl has also worked with many major studios and effects houses as a highly sought after creature and concept designer. Clients include Industrial Light and Magic, Lucasfilm, Ltd., Pixar, Walt Disney Feature Animation, PDI, Entertainment Arts, LucasArts, Chronicle Books, and various zoos and natural history museums.

Terryl is also the author of “The Katurran Odyssey”, volume one of a forthcoming series “The Katurran Trilogy”. In addition Terryl is involved with several other book and film concepts, as well as teaching Creature Design and Construction/Anatomy at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA.

Beautiful and inspiring

[[VIDEOID:mo28OMDS8F5QOU3]]This book made my face light up. Packed in this 160-page book is a collection of new artwork from Terryl Whitlatch. You won't see any of her Star Wars creatures that appeared in The Wildlife of Star Wars - you should probably get that book as well.

The gallery consist of paintings and sketches of real and imagined animals. The designs for the imaginative creatures are beautiful and believable. There are sea, land and flying creatures. Great variety.

Many sketches are included, some picked from her art classes. For selected creatures, they are so detailed separate drawings on the muscular anatomy and bone structure are included. Scribbled on the sketches are labels and notes, though a bit small but only because there's so much packed onto the page.

Besides creature concept art, there are also stylized character designs. Rocket rhinos, psychotic pandas, comical cerberus, cupid frogs are just some of the many animated ideas. They are really fun to look at.

This isn't an instructional book so there aren't pointers on how to draw, but you can get lots of ideas or understand what's possible just by looking at the drawings.

This inspiring book is highly recommended to anyone who loves animal art.

A good gallery, but I miss some explanation and instruction.

Let me be clear at the outset:
1. I love fantasy art, and I love paleoart.
2. Terryl Whitlatch is clearly a talented artist. Her work reminds me of that of Mauricio Anton and James Gurney. She can do anatomical drawings of extinct, modern, and imaginary animals, draw characters, etc. in a number of styles from the ultra-realistic to the cartoonish.

This book is filled with interesting and delightful art. What I hoped for is some explanation of the thought process behind the drawings. For example, the "Pre-Tracker" is reminiscent of the extinct predator Andrewsarchus, and has some aspects of the modern wolf, but it has six limbs. It would be nice to know the origin of the concept, what kind of environment was envisioned for that animal, etc.
Also, it would be nice to have some rules of thumb how to make imaginary animals look bizarre, but somehow realistic. Alas, there is none of that here--this book is basically a gallery.

Readers should check out James Gurney's "Imaginative Realism."

Wish I had read this before my accountant gave me his "expert" advice....

Brilliant work. I had no idea my IRA could do those things. Great primer for self-directed IRAs

This attorney/author really knows his stuff. I love my accountant, but after having read this, I think it

may be time for a new one.....I guess since I make more money than he does, he really didn't go out of his

way to help me 'do it right' from the beginning. A great eye opener. Sometimes you just have to take the time

to educate yourself. I have no one to blame but myself... Anyway....A must read at any net worth level.

Book is worth it's weight in gold, just have to sit your self down with some Starbucks and start thinking outside the box.

Loved this book!!

This is a fantastic book! You cannot beat this price for the amount of information received. As an investor, I have been interested in learning about investing through an IRA and this book clearly explains the pros and cons for me. I learned so much from one book!

I have read other books by Mr. Bronchick and they have helped me make serious returns on my investments. With his advice, my latest real estate sale made me over $150k. I highly recommend this book, in addition to his various books on real estate investing and flipping. His direct, no BS approach is easy to understand. Great read!!

John Forrest is a teacher and writer based in London. He first traveled to Peru in 1981, after graduating with a BA Comb.Hons in Geography and Statistics from Exeter University. He returned to Peru regularly to lead study tours and to research, write, and publish his own travel guide. He is a committee member of the Anglo-Peruvian Society and continues to visit Peru as Chairman of the Tambopata Reserve Society. Julia Porturas was born in Peru and studied at La Católica University in Lima and Birkbeck College, London. She graduated with a BA Hons in Hispanic and Latin American Studies. In Peru, she worked for several years for a major state enterprise, and she is now an administrator in London.

LOVE THESE $8 short and sweet BOOKS! The South Africa one was incredible in it's offering of tidbits.

this one, Peru, is a huge focus on the past history. in my opinion, too much. i am more interested in the current goings on as i am traveling there soon. would have liked more general infos on the demographics, the peeps, customs, the cultural niceties like what i should and should not be doing, wearing etc.

overall, a good place to start research ( well written ) but i think you would find the same info in any other guide book. so i guess i'd recommend skipping this one. For Peru scoop... go with your regular, favorite travel guide book/s.

I gave this book four starts because in covers a lot of aspects of Peru culture in a small book. It is a good introduction to Peru, but not recommended for someone looking for an in-depth discussion.

About the Author
During his fifty-five-year career, Clifford D. Simak produced some of the most iconic science fiction stories ever written. Born in 1904 on a farm in southwestern Wisconsin, Simak got a job at a small-town newspaper in 1929 and eventually became news editor of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, writing fiction in his spare time.

Simak was best known for the book City, a reaction to the horrors of World War II, and for his novel Way Station. In 1953 City was awarded the International Fantasy Award, and in following years, Simak won three Hugo Awards and a Nebula Award. In 1977 he became the third Grand Master of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and before his death in 1988, he was named one of three inaugural winners of the Horror Writers Association’s Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Time trails in your own backyard....

I've lost track of the number of times that I've reread this little book over the years- I know that I've taken it on camping and field trips several times. Simak weaves a feeling, an atmosphere, that is not only believable, but one that you want to recapture again and again. You buy the characters, you buy the ideas, you buy the reality of the surroundings. And that is all the more remarkable in a time-travel story.

Asa Steele was a paleontogy instructor from a small western college- and just about fed-up with it. He returned home to rural Wisconsin on sabatical to think things over- and to investigate what he thought might be the site of a crashed UFO that he remembered as a boy. Like so much else, it was still there unchanged. The fragments that he escavated came back from the university lab as belonging to an unknown alloy with extraordinary properties. Yet there was nothing else that really proved an extraterrestrial origin. That is, until his dog started to bring back dinosaur bones and other artifacts from the gateway that the ship had punched through the space-time fabric....

While kids will love this story, it isn't really a child's book. The adult character development is quite good. So are the plot complications (of course the government would try to seize a gateway into the past- to hand over to its corporate masters.) But the theme of unlimited, pristine, uninhabited worlds ready for the taking are what really sets this particular book apart. I know that I would pack up and take off to them in a heartbeat.

A great read for all ages

I got this book at a library sale at the age of 10 and I read it right away. I loved every minute of it and I have reread it several times in the past 9 years. This has time travel, dinosaurs, aliens, telepathic dogs, and ambitious businessmen and governments. It is a little dated, but definitely still relevant.

Bei der Bildkommunikation wird im ersten Schritt die Botschaft direkt aus dem Zeichen selbst dekodiert. Hierzu hat der Mensch fest verankerte Gebärden die er instinktiv anwendet. Schickt der Sender ein Signal mit Hilfe von Gebärdenzeichen, so wird die Botschaft vom Empfänger unmissverständlich angenommen. In Kinderzeichnungen beispielsweise findet man häufig linienartige Sonnenstrahlen. Hier wird die Linie als Symbolik dafür verwendet, dass die Sonne wärmend auf uns Menschen strahlt.

Grundsatz Imageryforschung:
Die Imageryforschung geht davon aus, dass der Mensch äußere Einflüsse durch verschiedene Verarbeitungskanäle aufnimmt. Einerseits geschieht dies durch verbale, andererseits durch nonverbale Kommunikation. Der Rezipient gewinnt folglich verschiedene Eindrücke woraus innere Bilder im Kopf generiert werden. Je stärker diese inneren Bilder verankert sind, desto besser ist die Erinnerung an den damit verbundenen Gegenstand. Great Resource for Parents

Having played pretty much every sport possible growing up, and then focusing on basketball in high school and college, my passion for sports has been both a gift and my downfall on occasion. At times, it was a great place for me to experience the relationships that can only exist within a team framework. It was also an outlet for an introvert who didn't feel like I belonged except on a basketball court sometimes. On top of those things, it was just fun to play.

Unfortunately, sports also became my God at times. It dominated my time, effort, and focus, pushing other more important things to the background. It also brought out many of my negative qualities (such as anger and pride). As a parent now, I'm concerned about how to engage my kids in sports in a way that will glorify God, and that's why I'm thankful for men like C.J. Mahaney and resources like his new booklet, Don't Waste Your Sports.

This short booklet probes some of the issues that arise in sports, and delves into the purpose behind the games we play. The brevity (only 56 pages) makes it ideal for working through with kids, and the application questions for both athletes and parents are very helpful.

We're in the midst of an exciting time in the world of sports. Coming off a weekend where the NFL conference championship games delivered unprecedented television ratings for the yearly battles for the Super Bowl, we are all aware that sports drive incredible human interest and financial gain. In fact, a solid case could be made for the argument that sports drive much of what we do in America, from how we spend our time and energy, to how we spend our money.

That said, have you ever stopped to consider the purpose for which God intended sports? Have you thought about how sports influence your walk with God, and how your "walk with sports" influences others' views of God. C. J. Mahaney has, and he's written an excellent booklet that should be required reading for all of us.

In Don't Waste Your Sports, Mahaney reminds us that "sports are a gift from God. But as soon as you introduce the human heart, things get complicated." Most of us have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly where sports are concerned. But, perhaps, things would be different if our approach to sports was one of worship and an opportunity to glorify God. In 1 Corinthians 10:31 we are called to do just that:

So, whatever you eat or drink, whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Mahaney's sports application of this verse is "to bring glory to God as athletes, we play sports in a way that draws attention to God's greatness instead of our own."

We see a lot of athletes give glory to God, before and after good or bad performances. However, in most cases, athletes use the sports stage to seek glory and praise for themselves. We've all done it at one time or another. But as Mahaney notes, there's a depth of obedience to which we are all called relative to using our abilities and endeavors in sports for God's glory. Yes, even sports exist to point to the glory of God.

The booklet is a quick read, packed with useful analogies, references, and tips, all in less than 60 pages, for less than five bucks. Not only is it a must-read for athletes at all levels, it is an especially good tool for coaches and parents of young athletes. Mahaney adds a special "Word to Parents" chapter, along with application questions for athletes and parents.

Great for Athletes or Non-Athletes...

Don't Waste Your Sports was a short book. Some of the chapters were only about 6 minutes long in the audio version. The whole book took less than an hour to listen to. That was OK though, the book was very to the point. And, quite frankly, it is about sports, with the hope that athletes will read it. So, not trying to be mean, but a short book might have been the best choice.

I really enjoyed this book. I am not a huge sports fan, so I have always been keenly aware of some of the negative aspects of sports. Not being a good athlete myself, has also increased my sensitivity to the pride that reigns supreme in many good athletes. It was refreshing to hear many of those issues addressed directly in this book.

This book is sadly a waste of time and money

Don't repeat my mistake. If you're serious about passing the 70-533 exam, this book won't help.

PROS:
The book gives a reasonable break down of high and mid level topics to guide your examination preparation.

CONS:
Q&A section at the end of each chapter has several wrong answers.
Q&A sections are weak and do not reflect the actual test.
Editorial mistakes throughout. I'm not talking about little errors, but big elementary school mistakes.
Sections don't cover the right material deep enough.

SUMMARY:
This book is sadly a waste of time and money. The actual exam is filled with Powershell, case study questions, and "put execution steps in the right order." This book does almost nothing to prepare you for the test. A better exam prep would be the MeasureUp online practice exam and the real Azure documentation.

There are a TON of inconsistencies in the book and a lot of questions flat out have the wrong answers. There are even mispelled words in azure command examples. You can clearly tell the author of chapters 1 and 2 did NOT write chapter 3. The complete flow changes with inconsistent variable usage and inconsistent numbering of questions to answers. Whoever edited this book missed a LOT of stuff. Also, Question 7 for chapter 3.1 has a choice between and which is unfair because is a sub element of . The readings do not make it logical when confronted with the Thought experiments at the end of each section of a chapter. And ANY Exam that makes you memorize all the different sizes of VMs available in order to know what is the best fit is not really checking your knowledge of the platform. Any normal human being would just look at what is available when making that choice without having to Memorize all the different sizes from Free to Premier. Example Question: A worker role requires at least 3 cores, 48 GB of memory and local resource storage of 500 GB. Which instance size would meet this. Most people would look this up or query it in PowerShell. They certainly wouldn't have to remember it.
