Sentient City: Ubiquitous Computing, Architecture, and the Future of Urban Space (MIT Press)From The MIT Press

Our cities are "smart" and getting smarter as information processing capability is embedded throughout more and more of our urban infrastructure. Few of us object to traffic light control systems that respond to the ebbs and flows of city traffic; but we might be taken aback when discount coupons for our favorite espresso drink are beamed to our mobile phones as we walk past a Starbucks. Sentient City explores the experience of living in a city that can remember, correlate, and anticipate. Five teams of architects, artists, and technologists imagine a variety of future interactions that take place as computing leaves the desktop and spills out onto the sidewalks, streets, and public spaces of the city. "Too Smart City" employs city furniture as enforcers: a bench ejects a sitter who sits too long, a sign displays the latest legal codes and warns passersby against transgression, and a trashcan throws back the wrong kind of trash. "Amphibious Architecture" uses underwater sensors and lights to create a human-fish-environment feedback loop; "Natural Fuse" uses a network of "electronically assisted" plants to encourage energy conservation; "Trash Track" follows smart-tagged garbage on its journey through the city's waste-management system; and "Breakout" uses wireless technology and portable infrastructure to make the entire city a collaborative workplace. These projects are described, documented, and illustrated by 100 images, most in color. Essays by prominent thinkers put the idea of the sentient city in theoretical context.

Excellent and Very Large Sci-Fi Compilation
By Angry Old Man
I couldn't believe all the information they managed to place in this history of Science Fiction. It covers the media spectrum: Movies, TV, books, magazines and it's loaded with photos. I have a number of similar texts going back to the 1970's, this is one of the best.

A Remarkable Resource for Every Science Fiction Fan
By Terry Sunday
The 576 densely packed pages of "Sci-Fi Chronicles" contain more interesting information per square inch than any other book about the genre that I've encountered in recent memory--if not ever. At the volume's bargain-basement Amazon price, the cost per useful data byte is minuscule. Why, it's practically free. Who could resist it?

"Sci-Fi Chronicles" is not the type of book to sit down with and read from cover to cover. That would be a Herculean task indeed. It's more of an encyclopedia, but in the best possible way. For example, I have no use for traditional encyclopedias and their dry, boring lists of topics sparsely covered in a paragraph or two each. Rather, "Sci-Fi Chronicles" is a stand-alone, fully integrated, visually stunning, utterly fascinating repository of detailed information about the entire universe of sci-fi in all of its splendor.

The magnitude of General Editor Guy Haley and the contributors' achievement amazes me every time I pick up this book and spend an hour or so just random-associating my through it. Books, authors, movies, TV shows--they're all in here, at just the right level of detail. Topics receive as much coverage as they warrant--a page, two pages, several separate sections--based on their roles and importance in the history of the genre. The approach works perfectly, in my opinion.

Whatever you do, don't skim over the "How to Use This Book" section on pages 12 and 13. Read it carefully. It explains how to use the color codes, icons, notes, sidebars and timelines that appear in the book. These elements are a must for the reader to understand in order to get the most out of this superb magnum opus.

Review

Winner of the 2008 National Outdoor Book Award for Nature Guidebooks

"[I]f any places needed a field guide, it was Peru, second only to Columbia as the most bird-rich country in the world . . . . Now, 40 years after he first envisioned a field guide, [John] O'Neill and his principal co-authors, Tom Schulenberg and Doug Stotz, have finally completed the guide against which all others for the New World tropics will be judged . . . . The Birds of Peru's nearly 4,000 color illustrations alone--more than double that of any other single-country neotropics guide--set it apart . . . . [It] is the culmination of an incredible amount of fieldwork, but that doesn't mean the exploration is finished . . . . This book isn't the end; it's really the beginning"--Don Stap, Audubon Magazine

"Any North American birder will be green with envy paging through this volume. The first comprehensive field guide to the birds of Peru, it describes nearly 1,800 species--compared to the 600 or so in the continental U.S."--T.C. Williams, Choice

"Ornithologists, birders, conservation biologists, naturalists, ecotourism leaders and companies, and bird photographers will be very pleased to have available this invaluable field guide which is a landmark addition to Peruvian ornithology and birding. The book will be an essential addition to the libraries of these people, and also should be added to the collections of academic and larger public libraries. The authors, artists, and publisher deserve very high praise for producing an essential and necessary reference book about Peru's avifauna as well as a stunningly beautiful, book that is a joy to look at and cherish with unreserved pleasure. Most highly recommended."--International Hawkwatcher

"Peru has long needed a field guide that accurately and concisely deals with the preponderance of birds within its borders. When I finally got my hands on a finished copy of this book, what I found was a field guide that is both useable and beautiful. . . . Amazingly, the authors have managed to fit everything into a guide that's only slightly larger than your typical National Geographic Guide to the Birds of North America, and it covers over twice as many species."--Matt Brooks, Vermillion Flycatcher

"Owners of bird guides to other South American countries will find this publication extremely valuable for its coverage of the numerous species found only in Peru. Just flipping through the pages of this volume will soon make anyone with an interest in tropical nature dream of seeing these birds in their native haunts."--Robert Bleiweiss, Quarterly Review of Biology

"I strongly recommend this guide. It is essential for anyone visiting Peru, Bolivia, or the western Amazon. I anticipate that it will add fuel to the boom in research and ecotourism in this magnificent country. It should be owned by all libraries, birdwatchers, serious ecotourists, and researchers who plan to visit Peru. It is a fitting monument to the work of all the authors, especially Ted Parker, who was responsible for so many of the fundamental insights into the natural history of the birds of this . . . most diverse of all countries."--Scott K. Robinson, Auk

"Birds of Peru is an excellent guide that packs a lot of information into a modest sized book. . . . Anyone who intends to bird Peru must have a copy of this book."--Frederic Brock, Wildlife Activist

"I think this is a great resource that will benefit any traveling birder. If I could only own one it would be this latest field guide. Schulenberg et al. is easier to read, information is more accessible, and the plates are generally more accurate and reflective of the species."--Geoff Carpentier, Newsletter of the Ontario Field Ornithologists

"This book will please birders and biologists living in or visiting Peru. It is also useful beyond the borders of Peru into adjacent areas of South America. It is a little on the heavy side for dragging through a hot jungle, but what else can you expect with such an enormous bird list."--Roy John, Canadian Field Naturalist

From the Back Cover

"Birds of Peru is in that select pantheon of bird books destined to make a lasting contribution to ornithology. The authors and artists of this long-awaited book have given us a comprehensive guide that is both beautiful and accurate. Outstanding artwork, precise maps, and succinct text will help scientist and neophyte alike as they navigate the tsunami of birdlife within this fascinating country."--Steven L. Hilty, author of Birds of Venezuela

"Peru harbors one of the world's richest, most diverse avifaunas. Here, at last, is a comprehensive field guide that lives up to the challenge of sorting out and describing that diversity. The authors are uniquely qualified for the task, and have done a monumental job of condensing a formidable amount of information into a user-friendly format that will be an invaluable aid to birders and ornithologists of all stripes. The attractive, well-executed plates will greatly simplify the identification process, and should serve as a mouthwatering enticement for armchair travelers to catch the next plane to Peru!"--Kevin J. Zimmer, author of Birding in the American West: A Handbook

About the Author
The authors are some of the most eminent and experienced names in Neotropical ornithology. All are academics based at US universities (except Parker who tragically died in a plane crash in Peru a few years ago).

Exceptional Field Guide
By Mike R.
This book is a superb field guide. Unlike a number of other field guides or "illustrated checklists", the text diligently focuses on separating similar species from each other. There are good vocal descriptions too. In the introduction the authors state what taxonomy (checklist) they follow. Otherwise the species accounts are devoid of discussions justifying their taxonomic choices, thereby saving space for the business at hand. Occasionally they point out where this or that form may in fact be a separate species. These examples are typically illustrated as well. The editing is excellent - I've found a few very trivial errors (or confusing statements) so far.

The format is map/text with illustrations on the facing page. Each spread is introduced with a brief overview of the species described and depicted. There is a lot of useful information in these introductions. The type is pretty small but the font is easy enough to read. Most species get a range map. The maps are legible, clear, and easy to figure out - once one is even vaguely familiar with Peruvian geography.

The figures on any given plate usually face the same direction, thus facilitating comparisons. The poses tend to be lively. Overall the illustrations are simply outstanding. A few are perhaps a little weaker in the drawing but even these are beautifully painted and otherwise seem very accurate. The painterly style of the chief illustrator may be unappealing to some but don't mistake style for lack of substance. Those unfamiliar with American bird families can be assured that these birds are mostly very accurately characterized in terms of posture, shape, proportions, "facial expression" and so on. In fact you won't find better Tyrant flycatcher, antbird, or ovenbird (and the list goes on and on) illustrations in any other publication I'm aware of - just as good perhaps but not better. If I may single him out from his impressive colleagues, Lawrence McQueen, the main illustrator of this book belongs on any short list of the world's very best working bird illustrators. There is a rightness and justness to his drawing that knowledgeable birders will instantly recognize.

This book is also about as compact as it can be and still cover 1800 species. It is comparable in size and weight to Stevenson and Fanshawe's Birds of East Africa (the hardcover edition), and like Robson's Southeast Asia Guide or Rasmussen and Anderton's Birds of South Asia Volume 1, the Birds of Peru will hopefully show future field guide authors/designers just how compact a book that covers such a huge avifauna can be. Yes it's larger and heavier than your National Geographic or Collins Guide but it's not a behemoth like a number of guides of recent years (especially the unabridged hardcover versions).

Finally the uninitiated should not confuse this book with A Field Guide to the Birds of Peru by Clements and Shany. That book, like the one considered here, also has a black spine and front cover with a lovely painting on it. The Clements and Shany guide, which is not without merit, is nonetheless plagued by disorganized plates and poor editing among other things.

This new guide to the Birds of Peru is now one of the very best bird guides available. It will inspire the user with confidence in making headway with difficult groups like tyrants and the rest. The authors and illustrators deserve a big thank-you from the birding community for this excellent book.

Essential for birding in Peru
By Thomas P. Rooney
I have used this guide on two previous trips to Manú National Park in Peru. Like a previous reviewer, I would give it 4.9 stars, but I am happy to round it up to 5 stars. If you plan to watch birds in Peru, this guide is as essential as your binoculars.

The illustrations, descriptions, and maps are excellent. There are no field marks given (like you would find in a Peterson's or Sibley's), but most species that appear similar are separated geographically or by elevation--the maps are very helpful in reaching an identification.

The book will seem heavy for a field guide to temperate zone birders, but it is actually pretty compact and light considering it has 1800 species. If you are going to bird the tropics, your field guide is going to be heavy--there is no way around that.

It would be nice if there was a companion guide to the Birds of Peru, with more information about conservation status, behaviors, etc. (much like Ridgely & Greenfield did with their Birds of Ecuador).

A Nearly Perfect Field Guide for Peruvian Birds
By Brian Allen
This is an excellent, rich guide to the identification of Peruvian Birds. You can tell as you look over the book that an incredible amount of research and time went into it and the authors do say that it had its beginnings as early as 1961! I also liked to see that the late great field ornithologist Theodore Parker was included as an author.

If I could, I would give this guide a 4.9 star rating as I feel there are only a few minor problems with it. With the vast number of species that have to be illustrated, described, and mapped it is almost impossible to make a field guide for most South American countries field worthy. This book is just a little too large and a bit heavy for the field. It is hardcover and a paperpack edition might be a bit lighter. I wish the illustrators could have been a bit more efficient in their use of space and condensed the plates slightly. For example on the Pigeons and Doves the Rock Dove, a species we are all familiar with takes up over 1/3 of a page while other species such as some difficult to id woodcreepers are limited to a much smaller area.

That said the book overall is excellent. I was relieved to see that all the species illustrated on the plates have species accounts on the opposite page with a map of their range. The species accounts are clear, concise and include information on altitude range, habitat, separation from similar species, population status, and additional identification notes. Most of the range maps are easy to use but I found some confusing as birds with small limited ranges are depicted only in a few provinces without reference to the country as a whole.

Most of the illustations are excellent but they do vary in quality as there are several illustrators for the book. I find that I prefer the plates in the Clements Field Guide to the Birds of Peru (not currently available on amazon.com) somewhat over those of this book but in general if I could only have one book it would be this one for ease of use and accessibility to the information on range and distribution.

lovely knitting book with gorgeous cable patterns ( but why the small print?)
By Marilyn
a lovely knitting book with gorgeous cable patterns. the important factor in this book is the SSE , stockinette stitch equivalent for each of the cable designs so one knows how wide the cable pattern is. The photos of the cables are clear and the directions are well written, both in graph form and word form.
The reason for the four stars is because of the small size of the print and small size of the graphs, I will even say they are tiny. I am sure any knitter would have been willing to pay a bit more for a larger book in order to have bigger print for the directions and graphs. Therefore for any pattern be sure to have a copy machine that enlarges the pattern so that you can read it easily.
However this is an important book for any knitter who loves to knit cables.

Love it!
By Julia Vedders
I learned to knit because I love cables. I preordered this book and I was not disappointed. I can't wait to start knitting some of the cable stitch patterns! I was also thrilled to see garment patterns that incorporate some of the more complicated stitch patterns. If you love intricate cables, you will love this cable knitting book!

Thank you, Norah!
By Pamela H Bubeck
First of all, I am a knitter NOT a designer. Now with that said, I will occasionally customize my knitwear according to my own personal style/taste using others designs/patterns. The first 31 pages are worth the entire purchase price of this book. Norah's tips and techniques are priceless and will benefit the beginner, as well as the experienced cable knitter. Add the Sideways Pullover, Scarf, and Chunky Cardigan patterns - my three favorite patterns of the fifteen - and you just bought the mother lode!

A unique read
By JM
I thoroughly enjoyed most of the short stories in this book and I'm really glad that I found it! The stories are all truly unique and makes the reader reflect on what they just read. Unlike some short stories, I actually like the twists at the end of a few. Some of the stories can be kind of gory with disturbing murders. It's a great mix of both horror, fantasy, sci fi.
Here are the short stories. My top favorites: In a Falling Airplane, Find the Blood!, So-Far, Seven Rooms.
Warning, there may be spoilers:

Zoo- A man finds a picture of his decomposing girlfriend everyday in the mailbox that he can piece together to make one of those decaying movies. An interesting twist, not bad.

In a Falling Airplane- A terrorist hijacks an airplane with two passengers who are busy trying to make a business deal. I really liked this one. I was surprised at the humor and voice that this piece had despite it being translated from a different language. I was interested in the characters and what would happen next- it even made me burst out laughing at times.

The White House in the Cold Forest- A man builds a house out of dead people. I like this one the least, but it's tragic in an ironic way.

Find the Blood!- A man and his family are in a "desperate" attempt to find a bag of blood for him after he got stabbed. This one was great and again, really funny. Normally, the story wouldn't have been too interesting, but the writing style and humor makes it a fun read.

In a Park at Twlilight, a Long Time Ago- Someone finds something in a sandbox. It was really short and I forgot what it was about.
Wardrobe- There is a murder, and a wardrobe that can fit a person...This one kind of plays out like a whodunit mystery. It was alright.
Song of the Sunny Spot- This book reminds me of some robotics novels, but I still thought it was a sad, but wonderful read. A robot was built for the purpose of burying their creator and in the process, learns what it is to be human and the meaning of death.

Kazari and Yoko - Two twin sisters, one perfect, the other no one likes. I think I've seen this somewhere...alright.

SO-Far- A boy is trapped in a world where his mother thinks his father is dead and lives on, and a world where his father thinks that his mother is dead. I love the twists and idea of it!

Words of God- This boy can command anyone to do what he wants. The idea isn't too original, but the final outcome is. I like the ending, except it kind of feels like Zoo.

Seven Rooms- There are seven rooms, one each with a prisoner. There is a mote/stream thing flowing through each of the rooms. One character is small enough to fit through, and so he visits each of the rooms and finds out why they are all there. This would be perfect for a horror movie...it's gory. I have been looking for something like this in book form, so I'm happy I read it!

Zoo
By The Figment Review
There is always a long list of reasons as to why we as readers choose to buy a particular book. Sometimes it's because of the cover, its shiny gloss finish or evocative illustration enticing us. Sometimes it's because of the title; at other times it can be because of the premise of the story. Most of the time though, it's a combination of these reasons, and more, that culminate in our decision.

So then, naturally, the question that I suppose comes to mind is what inspired me to buy a collection of horror stories? This is a especially potent question when one understands that I typically avoid this genre of fiction like the plague.

In this particular case, there was truly only one deciding factor. The author.

ZOO is a collection of short stories that crisscross between horror and science fiction. Following the lives of a group of ordinary and far-from-ordinary individuals, the book challenges us through eleven unrelated tales to question our own personal morality and mental prowess as we are pit against ourselves and the author in a search for the truth.

After having read Otsuichi's first English released novel, the phenomenal Calling You, I knew without a shadow of a doubt that I would be back to buy his next released work. But what I never suspected from the same man that wrote a masterpiece of inspirational fiction was that he was actually famous for an entirely opposite reason.

To start, Otsuichi's incredible skill with prose returns in full force as he weaves his tales effortlessly from one to another. A lack of writing talent is most certainly not to be found in the majority of this book. Along with the pitch-perfect pacing and word choice comes the author's most noticeable trademark: his surprising twists at the end. Just like in his previous work, if not slightly more so in some cases, Otsuichi manages to throw a curve ball into a story that turns it completely upside down along with the reader. There are several stories inparticular that deserve praise for the sheer fact that they are truly genius. Readers hoping to be surprised will find more than they ever hoped.

However, no sooner can I begin to praise him than I must do the unthinkable and let loose my criticisms. While nearly every story in this book is written on par with the excellent quality expected from an author like Otsuichi, the twists that follow at the end of the horror stories are not. I hated the fact that the horror stories routinely suffered from lackluster endings that left me desiring much, much more. In fact, to be quite honest, those stories felt for the most part as if they were dead weight to the rest of the novel, with the exception of the finale.

On the other hand, the science fiction, dark humor, thriller, and mysteries for the most part were downright magnificent, combining everything that makes this young author's writing brilliant along with some very thought provoking messages.

In many ways this novel will feel strange to both those who are new to the horror genre and those familiar. It really doesn't fit snuggly into any genre and comes across like a hybrid experiment of differing stories. A mix of emotions are portrayed that range from depression to contemplation. It wouldn't be an overstatement to say that several stories in this collection could change the way certain people live their lives. In particular, there is one story that I feel should be required reading for families suffering with domestic disputes. It's just that powerful.

Though this novel did not in any way convince me to explore the horror genre further, and in most cases accomplished just the opposite, it has once again cemented my fandom for this rising novelist.

While readers will most likely be unable to appreciate this collection as a perfect whole, the individual stories contained within it that portray the best of this talented author will prove unforgettable and gripping. If readers aren't too squeamish and can tread through the darker material to find the gems within, this book, like his previous, is simply not a book one can afford to pass over and should be promptly added to any book-lover's shelf.

Good mystery/horror read
By Indigo
I have read the Chinese version and so there may be inevitable comparisons between these two editions.
Otsuichi is my favourite Japanese author, able to meld normal life with fantasy/horror/ mystery seamlessly. His short stories are full of twists.
This collection of short stories was also adapted into a movie.
Otsuichi typically (when he's in a horror mood) writes in a cold matter-of-fact manner. This may translates to frustration for the English readers as his characters beat themselves up - in Chinese, perhaps the poetic nature of the language helps ease them. The opening story Zoo can be difficult to get through because the character engage in a repetitious monologue - which in turns dilute the impact of the ending.

My favourite story from this collection is So-far, a look at how parents can unintentionally affect their children, sometimes permanently.

‘Victor is a one-off… hilarious… superlative’ Piers Morgan

Victor Lewis-Smith, satirist, critic, and notorious puncturer of overinflated egos, shares a selection of his finest reviews from his years as the Evening Standard’s resident TV critic, with new and updated material. Lewis-Smith’s hilarious and scathing musings on the ‘idiot’s lantern’ are a chronicle of two decades of British television, and a celebration of the art of criticism.
As well as reproducing some of his most coruscating reviews (both positive and negative), the book chronicles the fallout that their publication provoked from those celebrities for whom anything less than 900 words of closely-argued adulation simply will not do. Celebrity chefs, compelling documentaries, dodgy science programmes, one-hit wonders, glorious arts shows, and comedies wondrous and dire, they’re all here, as are the responses, from sycophantic grovelling to death threats, and everything in between. None of our televisual gods is beyond the reach of Lewis-Smith’s rapier pen. Through his reviews and the searing commentary that accompanies them, Lewis-Smith offers an incisive appraisal of television and its relationship with British culture in the 21st Century.

‘The sharpness of his one-liners delights, and there are so many of them… From a Lewis-Smith review I get, on average, two giggles, one guffaw and a scream of laughter.’ The Spectator

A snortingly good read
By Birano
I very much enjoyed the storytelling here there are great chapters with wonderful prologues to the importance of the item. It has also led me to biographies of those mentioned such as Keith Floyd which I also had fun with. It is also rare for me to have to bone up on so many new words outside of literature which as very refreshing. A must read.
