It takes a while to get used to Vincent Curcio's highly colored prose, but his old-fashioned narrative technique suits his subject, the Kansas railroad mechanic who rose to become head of America's most dynamic car company. Born in 1875, Walter P. Chrysler came late to the automobile business, joining Buick in 1912, when the early companies were firmly established. Chrysler made his mark by being a great leader who thoroughly understood engineering and production, and who valued the contributions of his employees and directed them to produce high-quality, popularly priced cars. He made it his business to ignore conventional wisdom: he headquartered his company in New York instead of Detroit, commissioned a fabulous art deco skyscraper to house it, and introduced the first mass-produced, streamlined, aerodynamic car in 1934. From humble beginnings as a Kansas railroad-shop apprentice wiping down locomotives for 5U cents an hour, Walter Chrysler (1875-1940) rose to become a railroad master mechanic and foreman, then a leading auto manufacturer and industrial mogul. Brashly confident, convinced of America's limitless potential for economic growth, Chrysler, "the quintessence of American business in the 1920s," built Manhattan's Chrysler BuildingAart deco emblem of modernism and progressAwhose spire went up just one month before the 1929 stock market crash. This dynamic biography brings a surprisingly neglected giant out of the shadows. Chrysler, self-educated, self-made son of a German immigrant, is not nearly as well known as Henry Ford, even though he expanded Detroit's Big Two (GM and Ford) into the Big Three, when Chrysler Corporation bought out Dodge in 1928. (His legacy lives on in Daimler-Chrysler, formed in 1998.) Walter P. Chrysler (1875-1940) is the subject of this splendid new biography by Curcio (Suicide Blonde). Although he established the mighty Chrysler Corporation (now DaimlerChrysler), there was much more to Chrysler's life. From hardscrabble beginnings as a railroad machinist, he rose with hard work through the ranks to head a locomotive factory. When Chrysler was introduced to his first automobile, it was love at first sight, and he soon found his way to Detroit and the fledgling automobile industry. He personally supervised the design of the first Chrysler automobile in 1924, and its quick success led, in part, to the founding of the Chrysler Corporation the following year. Chrysler loved a challengeDwhether it was designing a new car, saving a company from bankruptcy, or creating a new building that would change the New York skyline. There were personal setbacks, especially during the Great Depression, but he persevered. While some of the anecdotes here seem irrelevant and a few of the design chronicles are at times longwinded, the book has been rigorously researched and reads well. A great read!

This book exceeded my expectations. It goes into detail about Chrysler and his early years and later years after he formed his own company. A lot of interesting information on his underlings in the corporation- especially KT Keller along with Zeder, Skelton, and others. It finishes off with more info on the later years after his passing and the turmoil the company went through to stay alive. I would recommend this book.

This book is very detailed. Besides discussing the history of Chrysler the man, it also discusses Chrysler's relatives, the history of Ellis, Kansas (Chrysler's boyhood home), the history of other car companies and their founders, and the Great Depression. Anyone who reads this book will feel as if he or she knew Chrysler personally upon completing the book!

The other great one

Having read extensively in the past about both Ford Motor Company and General Motors, I was very interested in getting to know the other member of the "Big Three" (sadly, today we can only talk about the remaining two after Chrysler's incompetent Bob Eaton surrendered the company to Daimler Benz).
Although the book is centered in Walter P. Chrysler the author finds it hard not to get carried away by much more imposing personalities in the early automotive business, mainly Henry Ford and William C. Durant (founder of GM). They are mentioned 52 and 53 times respectively.
Both Ford and Durant are much more interesting personalities than Chrysler himself and if not for anything else, the book is worth the read just to get to know Mr. Durant. The reason he is much less known today than his other two competitors is that he resisted the temptation to change General Motors name to Durant Motors (he could have done it but decided the GM trademark was too valuable), later in his life he did found a company called Durant Motors but it didn't survive long. If there is an epic to be told about the automotive industry in the USA it is Durant's: he founded General Motors, was ousted from the company, founded Chevrolet, bought his way back to GM control, was ousted again, founded Durant Motors, lost everything after the crash of 1929 and if not for the monetary help his friends (including Walter Chrysler) gave him at the end of his life he would have lived his last days in abject poverty.
Walter Chrysler actually made his reputation and original fortune working for William Durant at General Motors' Buick division and after he quit the corporation eventually assembled the Chrysler Corporation (mainly from Maxwell Motors and the Dodge Brothers enterprises). It was a great accomplishment in itself as he started very late (too late thought many) to matter much, and yet he climbed to the third place in sales and eventually to the second place (outranking Ford Motor from 1936 to 1951). Sure, GM (through Alfred Sloan leadership) outclassed both of them and by such a wide margin that (until very recent times) there was absolutely no comparison between the leader and the other two.
An interesting fact mentioned in the book is that the Chrysler Building at New York was NOT built by the Chrysler Corporation, but by Walter Chrysler himself so he could give it to his children. At the time it was completed, it was the tallest building in the world.
The scope of Curcio's book is very wide and you end learning many things from the first years of automotive history. In other words, it is much more than Walter Chrysler's biography. I fully recommend it.

Our Children Need Great Parent and Communities as Well as Great Teachers

Excellent and balanced presentation of the reasons why many citizens have unrealistic expectations of teachers. Many citizens expect teachers to succeed with students who are hungry, neglected or abused at home. Mr. Kumashiro makes it clear that while teachers can certainly help, it takes involvement of the greater community and of parents for children to realize their full potential.

Not so Bad Teacher

Kumashiro shares his perspectives on the standards and standardization movement from the perspective of a classroom teacher and researcher. He reviews the history of the movement and the social, political, and economic drivers behind the drive to make teaching a business. There were many parts of Kumashiro's story that I have seen in my own experience as a classroom teacher, the pressure to teach like the "good teacher" who was getting higher test scores for his students, and the hiring of unprepared "experts" who have a degree in a subject but no pedagogical training are just two examples. Probably the most powerful topic in this little book (for me) was Kumashiro's discussion of the efforts to bypass traditional colleges of education and fast track content experts into classrooms. A call to action for all concerned with the future of education and children in America.

A strong counter argument to the testing craze

Kumashiro provides an important text getting to the point that teachers are constantly to blame for our educational woes. Parents and teachers will benefit greatly by citing Kumashiro's to the point arguments that cleanly tear down the popular facade that politicians and business-minded people rely upon to further their agendas. This is a smart book that does not get lost in overly academic language. Kudos to Kumashiro!!

This book is an attempt to broaden this point of view at the stage where the student first encounters the subject. The authors have treated tensor analysis as a continuation of advanced calculus, striking just the right balance between the formal and abstract approaches to the subject.
The material proceeds from the general to the special. An introductory chapter establishes notation and explains various topics in set theory and topology. Chapters 1 and 2 develop tensor analysis in its function-theoretical and algebraic aspects, respectively. The next two chapters take up vector analysis on manifolds and integration theory. In the last two chapters (5 and 6) several important special structures are studied, those in Chapter 6 illustrating how the previous material can be adapted to clarify the ideas of classical mechanics. The text as a whole offers numerous examples and problems.
A student with a background of advanced calculus and elementary differential equation could readily undertake the study of this book. The more mature the reader is in terms of other mathematical knowledge and experience, the more he will learn from this presentation.

A bit difficult for the non-professional but overall a fascinating book

I came to this book with the minimum background--calculus and advanced calculus, differential equations, and some linear algebra, and found it a bit tough going, but still enjoyable. In fact, for me, not being a mathematician but a math hobbyist, really, whose education is mostly in biology and art history, I found it pretty difficult but also quite fascinating and even mind-blowing. I only had the vaguest ideas about tensors, fields, and manifolds before this, although I knew that the theory of manifolds underlies differential geometry and Einstein's famous General Relativity theory.

I understand that the notation in this book is considered old-fashioned and may contribute to the difficulty of reading it. Not having had anything different I don't know if it was harder for me or not, but overall I didn't find the notation too bad. The authors make the interesting point in the introduction that notational developments have occupied much of the work in manifolds, which I found funny. This implies that you can be good at math notation but not that good at the math. So maybe there's hope for me yet. :-)

That issue aside, I found this a very complete and well presented discussion on the subject. Some of it seemed pretty abstract and even counter-intuitive; for example, the concept of distance between two points isn't necessary to have a manifold, and yet having a coordinate neighborhood, or a manifold consisting of differentiable functions is, or other similar properties. It is a little strange to consider that one can perform differentiation on a manifold without the concept of spatial distance, when to my mind taking delta y over delta x at the limit is just shrinking the distance down to nothing in order to obtain the derivative of a function, not to mention that this seems problematic given the requirement of either uniform or non-uniform convergence. How do you know the function converges without some concept of distance? If you're better at this stuff than I am perhaps you could leave me a brief comment if I'm getting something wrong here.

But I still learned a lot, and much of it is pretty amazing and even mind-blowing stuff. People wouldn't need psychedelics if they knew enough to be learning about tensors, manifolds, and topology. They could blow their minds just on this stuff. :-)

So go out and get yourself a book on tensor manifolds and blow your mind the natural way. Higher mathematics is just awesome stuff even if I'm not quite smart enough to really understand it, but I can at least appreciate it, and I probably got a lot further with it than most biology and art history majors. :-)

Tough for self-study

I have been using this book to study differential geometry for many years - a little bit at a time. This book is a fairly complete introduction to the subject. However, it does a poor job motivating and explaining the subject. I found it necessary to supplement with several other texts to really get a good grasp on the material in the book. A number of times, I have picked up something in another book and have gone back to this book and realized that I had not "gotten it" the first time through. If the book had more examples and concrete calculations it would go a long way to clarifying the material.

I would recommend getting a book like Guggenheimer's Differential Geometry and reading it first. This book then does a good job of generalizing the ideas to many dimensions.

Can't get over how good this book is.

As a physics-math major, I have never come across such a perfect book to start differential geometry. I buy a lot of Dover publishing books because of their cheapness, but this one is probably my most valued geometry book. No other book has been this terse and this clear at the same time.

This book provides a solid foundation for everything it does without assuming your understanding of anything before-hand.

For example, physicist-geared introductions tend to hide a lot of the real topology and linear algebra behind the subject. Almost every other book I've read assumes knowledge of dual spaces for vector spaces, and just gives a quick definition. This book does not do any of that. It gives clear mathematical details and motivation to go with them.

Don't let the book's low price make it appear to be low quality.
