About the Author
Huda AbiFares was born in Beirut in 1965. She holds degrees in graphic design from Yale University School of Art and Rhode Island School of Design, and specializes in bilingual typographic research and design. She has taught graphic design at the American University in Beirut, and is currently associate professor of visual communication at the American University in Dubai, UAE.

An excellent first on the subject

Not only does this book provide an excellent overview of the history of Arabic script and printing, but it also lays out a vision and guidelines for the development of contemporary Arabic fonts. The book also focuses on the history and state of Arabic printing (as opposed to Arabic calligraphy), and highlights the technical challenges that arose from the adoption of what essentially is a calligraphic script to mechanical (or digital) printing processes.
The book ends with a selection of type designs by contemporary Arab type designers, which gives the reader a feel of what is happening out there in this field.
I recommend this (beatifully designed) book to anyone who deals with Arabic publishing, design or type design.

This epistolary picture book is attractive and easy to read, sometimes presenting the writers of the letters in the illustrations, and sometimes showing Tabby as she formulates her responses. Tabby follows her own advice, and her well-being is orchestrated through machinations and common sense, as she shines a light on how a person (or parrot, or skunk, or cat) can make her own happiness. It is a positive message, although the way it comes about might surprise some readers. This book is well suited for one-on-one sharing, with plenty of opportunity for trying on different voices. Cat dictates shrewd advice to the troubled creatures of Critterville—a pampered cat, a sad basset, a chatty parrot, a lost bear, a lonely skunk, a frantic hamster, and an anxious groundhog. Using common sense, she counsels the parrot to listen, the skunk to be patient, and the groundhog to shine on his special day. Fizzy Hamster is advised to “stop and smell the cedar chips,” while Manfred Basset is directed to sniff out happiness around him. Although some animals require more guidance than others (spoiled feline Boots runs away after his fourth whiny missive—opening up a purr-fect home for the appreciative Tabby), her wisdom eventually prevails. Roberts’ playful artwork provides many details that extend and enhance Crimi’s clever text. About the Author

Carolyn Crimi is the author of numerous picture books, including Boris and Bella, Where's My Mummy?, and Don't Need Friends. She was born and raised on Long Island, New York, and now lives in Illinois with her husband and pug.

David Roberts is the illustrator of A House Called Awful End and the other books in the popular Eddie Dickens Trilogy, as well as the picture books Rapunzel: A Groovy Fairy Tale and the Charlotte Zolotow Honor Book Mrs. Crump's Cat. He is also the author-illustrator of the picture book Dirty Bertie. David was runner-up for the prestigious Mother Goose Award for children's illustration. He lives in London, England.

It's all in your perspective

Tabby D. Cat is a hungry alley cat who will solve the problems of the animal world in exchange for food. In typical "Dear Abby" fashion, Tabby receives and answers letters from animals of all stripes. There's spoiled fellow cat Boots who doesn't appreciate being fed sardines, being dressed in a sweater, or being carted around in a baby carriage by his little girl owner. There's Manfred the hound dog who's searching for the meaning of life. There's Pauline the parrot who might have a question if she could just stop talking long enough to think of one. And there's Stanky the love-starved skunk, Betty the runaway circus bear, Fizzy the dizzy hamster and Guy the groundhog who's nervous about his first performance.

Tabby not only answers her correspondents in creative and thoughtful ways, she manages to find a convenient and unique solution to improve the life of one of her correspondents - and her own. Just shows what you can do if you change your perspective.

The illustrations are cute and attractive. The page layouts are also engaging, as each is presented in letter format. Tizzy's letter format is especially funny. Toward the end of the book there are a number of classified ads that tell us how Tabby's correspondents' problems have been resolved.

The book is witty and humorous, which will appeal to parents and perhaps older children. Younger children - those too young to read the newspaper or to have heard of an advice column - will be a little baffled. The story works even without an understanding of an advice column, but it loses a lot. I would recommend it more for ages six to ten.

In DEAR TABBY, Tabby gives advice to a cat who is unhappy with her owner, a dog looking for happiness, a parrot who likes to talk but doesn't like to listen, a circus bear who has run away from the circus, a skunk looking for love, a hamster who's stuck running in circles, and a groundhog feeling the pressure of his first Groundhog's Day. Tabby's advice doesn't always seem to hit the mark right away, but she somehow manages to help turn their problems around with a successful solution. In the end Tabby even helps herself when she finds a home with someone to love her, and closes with what just might be her best advice yet. Written in Dear Abby style, and complimented by the colorful illustrations with fonts to match the personalities of the authors of their letters, readers get another dose of Crimi's much-loved humor.

Author Carolyn Crimi nails the epistolary form. Each exchange between the animal inquirer and Tabby short and sweet with tons of personality.

David Roberts illustrations have this hip and slick retro style that still feels contemporary, and in this era of digital communications, seeing the use of paper, pencils, and typewriters delights the nostalgia buff in me.

This book is heavier in mathematical analysis than other typical health economics textbooks. I'm talking about beyond typical microeconomics graph curves and marginal analysis. Watch out if you are expecting a more narrative discussion of health economics topics.

About the Author

Lance Coleman is a Quality Engineer and Lean Leader at The Tech Group where he serves as site Kaizen, CAPA, and customer complaint coordinator―managing the internal quality audit program. Lance has worked in Medical Device, Aerospace, and other regulated industries for over 15 years. He has a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from the Southern Polytechnical University in Marietta, Georgia. He is an American Society for Quality (ASQ) Senior Member as well as, Certified Six Sigma Greenbelt, Quality Auditor, and Biomedical Auditor. Lance also presently serves as the ASQ Lean Enterprise Division Publications Subcommittee Chair.

The book is based on personal inspiration that Lance drove meeting with people like Mr. Kano in person. Dr. Kano is a renowned authority on customer satisfaction rather “customer enthusiasm”. Reading the book one realizes that Lance has contextualized the models to real life issues faced by many professional in daily work life. The book is replete with brief and interesting case studies from well-known corporations which Lance has narrated with perfect ease. “The Customer-Driven Organization: Employing the Kano Model” is an enjoyable read for anyone trying to understand basic drivers of human satisfaction to being a field book for implementing an organization-wide initiative for creating and enhancing customer driven value. Weight Loss on Steroids - Lose a Belief, Lose Weight!

Steroids? I'm not kidding you, weight loss on steroids is the only way I can describe my recent review of the book, Theta Healing Rhythm For Finding Your Perfect Weight by Vianna Stibal.

I get it!

It could be because I've spent the last four years learning to look at life through a whole new lens.

I've tossed out my age-old belief system that was a disservice to me, not to mention to my poor children also.
My somewhat "rotund" body has shed weight that now has me down to a manageable size where I look and feel like I'm in my pre-childbearing state, albeit with a few hefty stretch marks!

Don't stop reading now. You have to hear how Vianna has managed to take a simple spiritual approach to the emotional weight we all carry around with us.

We can't seem to shed the weight no matter what and we always give up.

The funny thing is, we never ever thank our Creator for giving us our Divine physical being, and we never think of praying for guidance to release the watershed of toxic thoughts and actions we've created within ourselves.
I just get a sense that Theta Healing Rhythm will change all that.

We know all the excuses for why we're overweight. Here are a few that I've taken the liberty to over-exaggerate from Vianna's original, beautiful examples in the book:

1. I'm overweight because my family is overweight.
2. I'm safe and protected, hiding my emotions (anger, jealousy, greed, etc.) behind my weight.
3. It's my genetics; those darn ancestors passing on the fat gene to me!
4. Pump that husband/wife up with food and they won't cheat on me!

Sound familiar?

Vianna's approach to releasing resentment mirrors many other belief system workshops that I've spent ions of money on since the beginning of time - well, not really, but it sure feels like it.

Even juicier in this book is her approach to blessing our body and our food, releasing layers (emotional and physical pollutants), and my favorite, exercises without exercising! It doesn't get any better than that.
Even though I love her process of exercises without exercising, I have to say that my favorite part of this book is her practice that releases sadness from deep within.

I can't even describe this exercise except to say that there were a lot of heavy-duty moans and groans coming from my house for a few hours. I'm sure my neighbor wasn't exactly happy with the scary sounds, but it worked very well for me, thank you!

I really wish I would've discovered Vianna's other books before reading this one.
Her earlier works, Advanced ThetaHealing, On the Wings of Prayer, TheTaHealing: Introducing an Extraordinary Energy-Healing Modality, ThetaHealing Diseases and Disorders would have given me a better insight into what to expect with this current Theta Healing research.

But, then again, the Divine never sends me what I need until I'm ready for it.

Nevertheless, it's a book for weight loss on steroids! I'm sticking to my description and I'm pumping up on exercising without exercising!

Excellent, Integrated Approach to Releasing Weight

Thetahealing Rhythm For Finding Your Perfect Weight by Vianna Stibal is an incredible book. It isn't for everybody, but if you have experience, or are interested in energy healing, this will be right up your alley. Being unfamiliar with the author's previous books, I was initially confused about what thetahealing entails. However, she cleared up my confusion pretty quickly. The integrated mind, body, spirit approach she offers is what sets this program apart from so many others. Her introduction contains the divine revelation "Anyone who tells you that you can release weight without exercise is trying to sell you something. You have to exercise!" The latter sections of the book deal with exercise and nutrition. But like all good teachers she starts by taking a deep look at the foundation of the issue. Beliefs. Those of us who have successfully lost extreme amounts of weight know, that the outward changes only mirror the effect of the inward changes. And those beliefs must change drastically. Vianna Stibal covers many of the limiting, dangerous beliefs in detail. That section alone makes this book a 5 star read. This is a fantastic book. The author sums it up best by saying, "This program is for those people who are intuitive;who realize that there is no separation between mind, body, and soul." Many of the ideas offered, are concepts I wish I'd have been exposed to years ago. There are empowering points she makes, that I've been trying to teach to my own personal training clients. The sections on running and exercising "without exercising" are brilliant. This book is a powerful tool, and is a definite keeper in my fitness library.

Grade 5 Up-Anyone who has been touched by Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl will be moved by this account that opens on the day Anne received the journal for her 13th birthday. The color photo of the diary set opposite the text lends immediacy and a sense of reality to the commentary. The feelings are reinforced throughout by the authors' prodigious research and the accumulation of details through the photographs. Some of the pictures included have never been published before, and their lengthy captions describe not only who is in the photos, but also the circumstances under which they were taken. Framed pages expand on the political and economical situations of the time. The well-written main narrative, which uses aptly chosen quotations from the diary, takes readers from Anne's normal, happy childhood through the years in the Secret Annex to the betrayal and Anne's death from typhus in Bergen-Belsen just months before her 16th birthday and only weeks before the liberation of the camp. For readers the loss is double. One feels the personal loss of a bright, fun-loving, and talented individual who might have made a difference in the world and also remembers that many Anne Franks died during that nightmarish period.

The individual photos of Anne's early life are generally unexceptional, mostly snapshots, a bit blurry at times, like any family album; that's why they bear witness to the way genocide destroyed people like you and me. At the same time, the book puts Anne Frank's story in a historical context. The handsome design, with well-captioned photographs and short essays in spacious type, will hold browsers as well as those who want to read the book through. Excerpts from Anne's diaries are combined with an account of the two years in the Secret Annex (from the time of going into hiding until the betrayal, arrest, and deportation) and also with a general history and photographs of the rise of Nazism and the fate of the Jews. Several large, clear maps also tell the story, including where Anne Frank lived (from Germany to Holland to the Secret Annex to Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen). All libraries will want this: for classroom units studying the Holocaust, for kids reading the diary, for everyone who remembers it. In an interview in Book Links (Sept_. 1993), coauthor Verhoeven, a historian at the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, emphasizes the connection between what happened to Anne Frank and racism today. Compliments The Diary of Anne Frank

This book is a great addition to The Diary of Anne Frank. The book begins before the diary would start with photographs of Anne and her family and details about their life together. These photographs really help to know more about Anne's life besides the details that she provides in her own diary. In addition to Anne's life, the book also discusses other members who lived in the Secret Annex, their photographs, and what happened to them. There is a diagram of the Secret Annex that helps put the living situation into perspective.

I have taught the Holocaust in a high school classroom and have found this book to be a great visual for adolescent learners, but it is also appropriate for younger readers as well as a more introductory look at the Holocaust. It is definitely a valuable resource whether you are teaching the Holocaust in a classroom or simply reading The Diary of Anne Frank on your own or with your children.

This was a very good book. It had lots of pictures and maps of her life and what she saw. I haven't read Anne Franks diary since in grade school and wanted to reread the story. This is very important book and look in the life of a girl who went through such a horrific time. I bought this for my children to someday read.

About the Author
John Dirk Walecka obtained his PhD in nuclear theory from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1958. He was Professor of Physics at Stanford University from 1966 to 1987 and then went on to become Scientific Director of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) from 1986 to 1992. He is now Governor's Distinguished CEBAF Professor of Physics at the College of William and Mary. His research interests cover theoretical nuclear and sub-nuclear physics, in particular nuclear structure, the relativistic nuclear many-body problem, strong-coupling QCD, and electroweak interactions with nuclei. He has published numerous papers on nuclear physics, and in 1996 the American Physical Society recognized his work with the award of the Bonner Prize. He has lectured on electron scattering throughout the United States and Europe.

Incredible tour through modern physics

Professor Walecka is author of well known textbooks and this is another example of his great mix of clear explanations and broad perspective. Just to give a bit of salt to this review, let me start from what I did not like about it: the illustrations are very poor, compared to the high level of the text. I must say that the publisher should have made any effort to provide more elegant version of most plots...

However, as I already said, the text is really good, expecially if you realize that each single chapter covers material which is usually introduced in entire courses. Of course, it is not possible to provide a full treatment of everything into a single (light) book. On the other hand, this is a unique chance to put so many puzzle pieces together, and provide the links between them. Just have a look at the table of contents to realize how wide the puzzle is. Then, read through the chapters to find almost all fundamental aspects with a rather complete introduction, including the mathematical approach.

I don't know if there is a single course which could be based on this textbook. On the other hand, it has been a great pleasure for me to have a broad review of so many different aspects of modern physics into a single book. I read it from the first to last page in a couple of weeks, and I enjoyed almost every paragraph.

broad discourse

Walecka is well known in physics as the co-author of Quantum Theory of Many-Particle Systems, which is a standard and rather advanced graduate text. Here in this new book, he takes a broader approach. The level of discourse is about that of the senior or honours undergraduate level, or perhaps a first year in grad school.

The scope is modern physics, where this is defined as quantum mechanics and relativity. Each chapter touches upon key ideas. The mathematical treatment is given rather briefly; probably inevitable due to space limitations.

One key result is the Feynman diagram. You can see how this maps to an equivalent integral and thus ultimately to a number, which is the scattering cross section. Really nice, and the intuitive meaning of the diagram demonstrates why the Feynman diagram was a seminal concept and a very practical tool in high energy physics.

A book is just great

The author, Prof. Dirk Walecka is a reknown physicist, and more so he is a great teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
