Caveat emptor

Do not buy this book unless you are willing to buy Primal Fuel at $100 for 30 servings. The majority of these recipes use that as a primary ingredient. I didn't find the book very useful because I wasn't going to buy that product.

From the very beginning of the book "the toad" (the author) is pushing a blender. Then almost every smoothie recipe calls for something called primal fuel. Some type of protein powder (he swears by it). There are some strange ingredients in most of these smoothies so if you don't want to be out buying up the health food store or if raw eggs are not appealing to you, don't bother. As for the kindle version mistakes a plenty! Really just not what I was looking for. I wanted a simple smoothie book with natural ingredients, not all these powders.

Packed with Superfoods, Includes Low Carb Recipes---My Mouth is Watering!

This recipe book (and I mean just the table of contents) got my mouth watering from start to finish!

In the book's intro, the author explains what low carb is: If the total carbohydrate count for a recipe is 20% or less of the total calorie count then it will be labeled low carb. Tongue in cheek, he adds, "Easy. Right?" Actually, nothing could be harder, especially for smoothies, which are traditionally packed with fruit. Yet, 18 of the smoothies match this definition!

Each of the 70 recipes contains not only the ingredients and instructions, but also the nutritional data, broken down into two categories: macronutrients (ie: fiber, sugar, protein, fat, and omega 6) and vitamins & minerals. The author explains in the intro, "The lower the omega 6 content, the better." The recipes also have a picture and comments/suggestions. The author also provides websites where you can purchase many of the ingredients. There is also an index of ingredients at the end, making this a very handy reference book.

The author explains, "Grains, legumes and dairy are not technically primal. However, we are not living in caveman times. You use a computer and refrigerator, right? Some recipes inside this book have whey protein powder, sour cream and/or yogurt. No smoothies contain legumes or grains outside of chocolate." I might add, if you are going to use dairy, sour cream and yogurt are among the least offensive and easiest to digest.

It is debatable as to whether chocolate is a Paleo food. I personally vote on the side of the author! Packed with anti-oxidants, it works, in moderation, for me! But overdo it and I get anxiety and/or insomnia, just as with caffeine. This is because of the bromothien in chocolate, which has a similar effect as caffeine.

The author wisely explains how to choose eggs safely so that they can be eaten raw. I personally can attest that if one does so, he will not get sick. I even detail in my books how to do this, and how I have eaten SEVERAL THOUSAND raw eggs without ill effect. OK, one time I did get some bloatedness and gas, but this went away in ten minutes after taking some activated charcoal tablets (which is wise to keep on hand for any kind of food poisoning). The fact is: if the egg comes from a healthy, non factory-farmed chicken, it should be no problem.

The author also includes kombucha (a fermented mushroom filled with friendly bacteria when eaten raw) in his recipes. I drink this stuff DAILY, as it aids the immune system. It's easy and ultra-inexpensive to make your own home brew. A man after my own heart, the author also includes a bit of coffee in some of the recipes.

The smoothies are wisely prepared with many super foods, foods packed with extra nutrition. These include kale, coconut butter, maca (a Peruvian root that balances hormones), cinnamon (great for stabilizing blood sugar and hence insulin), egg yolks, cacao nibs, blueberries, and more.

Some of the smoothies I can't wait to try include Mango Coconut Kombucha, Chocolate Lime Macadamia, Vanilla Ginger Blackberry Coconut, Creamy Coconut Macadamia Coffee, and more.

The backbone of you Holistic Care Reference Library

By the fourth edition a book assumes a fullness and depth that comes from diligence to the subject and all its ramifications. This text covers all the basic systems of healing that general health care providers have heard of or know of. It also covers all the lesser known methods or systems of healing.

I am interested in air and sunlight as components of healing. It is covered in this text in great detail.

My own training is Osteopathic. I am familiar with manipulative medicine but not necessarily the Chiropractic, deep tissue massage, and other tissue manipulation treatment systems. Those are all covered here in detailed descriptions of the various healing systems.

As a reference for overall and comprehensive healing systems outside traditional MD medicine, this is the foundation text. You can use this text as a starting point to seek further information on any subject you wish to pursue in detail.

The organization of the text is excellent with each section containing many varieties of healing arts within the section. The tables, charts, and fact boxes are well placed and full of important details.

I recommend this text for anyone who practices alternative medicine in any form. It is a great help to understand how other healing systems interact with your own. It is also excellent for understanding the basis for the other systems that you do not personally practice.
The information in this text does not disparage any system because all systems have something to offer a patient when used in the hands of a practitioner trained in the specific art.

Blind Spot

What were you thinking? Wait! Wait! Not the author, but the main character. I mean, seriously, didn’t she learn a thing from the 1st instalment in the series. All I could think throughout was ‘Edward is such a dark guy, can’t you tell he’s lying to you!’

The prologue refresher at the beginning of this segment of Tiff’s tale jogged me right back into the scene, allowing me to pick up where the last story left off. At the same time, the new twists and turns that Steel threw into the mix were fantastic. The realism and excitement of the story mixed with the hard hitting aspects of it. It was an intriguing mix that was the perfect stepping stone into the final segment of Tiff’s journey of erotic self discovery.

Book Two Just as good as the first and more

I love how this book picks up (actually gives a little refresher in the very beginning) where Blind Date ended. Ryan and Tiff....did they? Didn't they? Tiff doesn't remember much, she does remember her BFF kissing her, then waking up with him next to her. He is not wearing much, she isn't wearing much - and we have a runner. Scared of losing her BFF she choses to leave, even though they were at her place. She runs into Edward, who to say the least is a fantastic actor with wanting to apologize and telling her he has changed because of her. She blogs about the night before and the running into the leopard changing his spots. Ryan responds, but so does Edward (although his is not on the blog but in gifts and wooing her) Tiff tells Ryan and he is upset. Ryan texts her requesting she meet him he needed her. She goes to help him, and in the process she starts to remember what happened that one night with him, a little bit at a time. She again runs, and runs right into the arms of Edward, whose spots are showing, not as much as they should but enough to warn her, and she doesn't listen.

Thank goodness the driver she is riding with home from that time with Edward has the clear sense to give her some very great advise. This will be leading us into the next installment of this series. I am on pins and needles waiting to read it. I am certain that Edward (the conniving little jerk) will be around for a little bit, but in the ending of this book Ryan is pulling out all stops. Will he get to her in time? I hope so, but I hope that there is a little back and forth and just as much fun and darkness the first two books have held. I am anxiously waiting to see.

Too hot to handle but couldn't put it down

I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. Nikki Steele is a wonderful author of erotic romance. Blind Spot is just as hot and sexy as all her books. Tiffany wakes up in bed with her best friend, Ryan. She is terrified of losing his friendship by sleeping with him. She doesn't remember what happened that night, because of the vodka she drank. Ryan tells her nothing happened, because she was so upset at the thought of it. She ends up remembering and runs to Edward, while Ryan is gone, to try to forget. Will she go back to Edward or will she accept her feelings for Ryan? Be sure and read it to find out. I can't wait to read the next and last book in this series.

About the Author

Rita Coolidge is a two-time Grammy Award winner. She began her music career in Memphis before moving to Los Angeles, where she became one of the most popular backup singers in the business, recording with Leon Russell, Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, Stephen Stills, and other artists. Signed to A&M Records as a solo artist in 1971, she released more than two dozen albums in the years that followed, including the multiplatinum Anytime . . .Anywhere, and continues to record and tour. A sweet trip down memory lane for some of us

You have to be of a certain age to fully appreciate Delta Lady, the autobiography of Rita Coolidge. I always adored her music and the recognition she brought to Native American artists but until I read this book, I had no idea how involved she was with all of the music I grew up on.

This book is written in a folksy style. It roughly follows a timeline but there are drifts, just as if she was talking to you across the table. It's more like Ms. Coolidge sat down one day and answered the question "Tell me about your life." And what a life she's had.

From an early age, she was an integral part of the fabric of the music scene in the 60s and 70s, She is a gifted singer and song writer in her own right and she performed with legends like Leon Russell, Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Steven Stills, Graham Nash, Delaney & Bonnie and Kris Kristofferson. She was on the renown Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. Her stories and recollections about her tours and musical collaborations were fascinating to me because they were all my heroes.

It was the 60s and the 70s when Ms. Coolidge was making musical history with so many amazing musicians. She ended up having romantic relationships with quite a few of them and she's fairly open about discussing this in Delta Lady. Some of these relationships profoundly impacted the bands themselves. For example, she had a casual relationship with Steven Stills and then began seeing Graham Nash seriously, which caused so much tension in the band that David Crosby claims it is what broke up Crosby, Stills and Nash.

The book held a number of surprising facts for me, too. Things I didn't know like Leon Russell wrote Song For You (my favorite song of all time), Hummingbird and Delta Lady for Ms. Coolidge. That's how she got the nickname Delta Lady and what inspired the book's title. I also had no idea she helped write Layla (Eric Clapton's famous hit) although she never received public credit for it.

Of course, she covers her tumultuous relationship and marriage to Kris Kristofferson. She is quite candid about the difficult aspects of her relationships and her marriage and divorce and at times it's painful.

She discusses her family and her daughter throughout the book and it serves to give you a better picture of Rita Coolidge, the woman.

This isn't a literary masterpiece but if you lived through or loved the music of the 60s and the 70s, you'll likely enjoy this backstage look at the musicians we loved. If you know nothing about Ms. Coolidge or the music and musicians of that period, this probably won't hold much interest for you. For me, it brought back wonderful memories.

BTW, Ms. Coolidge is now 70 and still performing. If you get a chance to buy some of her music or catch a concert, she's still got the goods.

Behind the curtains

There is no one I would rather listen to than Rita Coolidge. I have gone to hear Rita at great venues such as Madison square garden when she was married to Kris, and just about any place she appeared in NYC solo. My favorite was at a Supper club within a hotel on Madison Avenue where In between songs she would stop and tell long stories about the circumstances of the song or the time and place. Rita is a great story teller who kept her audiences captivated and entertained. She was so warm and after the show you could have your picture taken with her and say hello.

Her stories although shorter than those in the book, however, never placed the person she was talking about in a bad light. She would never, as far as I remember criticize somebody else for there off key singing or repeat something they might have said in there darkest hours.
Throughout the book I wondered if this was Rita's voice or Michael walkers voice wanting to spice it up or an editor who thought a certain "tone" would sell more books. If you love Rita like I do you will have to buy the book and read it for yourself, however I think a lot was lost in having a co-author. Do not misunderstand me, the book was a page turner and gave me glimpse into a world that is hard to relate to. I guess it is just the side of Rita Coolidge I never imagined

if you know anything about the Delta Lady... then you know how she can tell a tale and how she can make an audience feel like she has come into their home and is sitting talking maybe over tea... its a great/fast read... as each chapter tells of her many experiences with some of rock and roll's greatest characters... it appears to be very honest and from her soul... the story of 'Layla' is something i had heard years ago... and its mentioned in the book 'Skydog' (Duane Allmans biography) but its great to finally hear it from her... WOW that's quite a rip-off for sure... amazing never before seen photos inside as well... and the cover should be made into a poster!!!

A good source for discussion

Michael Howard's cogent attempt to construct a theoretical substructure for "market socialism" provides a good basis for discussion around issues of post-capitalism and what kind of "socialism" remains viable for the twenty-first century. The book is especially valuable for its treatment of the Soviet-type socialist model and the reasons for its failure and also its well-researched presentation of various existing experiments in self-management, worker-ownership etc, with both their successes and shortcomings.
Howard's presentation of market socialism as an attractive and realistic improvement on capitalism is relatively persuasive, however his attempts to defend his model against other self-managed alternatives, notably Michael Albert's "Parecon" are less convincing. Howard merely states his belief that market socialism is a more practical and reasonable alternative to capitalism than the "parecon" but fails to adequately address the arguments directed at market systems by thinkers such as Michael Albert and Robin Hahnel.
One great advantage of Howard's book is its readibility and clarity. It is certainly a valuable contribution to socialist theory and there is much to admire in it. In contrast however, my personal opinion remains that the best proposal for a self-managing economy currently under discussion remains the Parecon model. As a companion to this work, I heartily recommend Michael Albert's "Parecon" for readers interested in exploring the potential pitfalls and weaknesses of the ideas contained in Howard's book.

Amazon sent me an email asking if I'd like to submit a review for this product. But this presents a problem, since Amazon never shipped it. I would actually love read Michael Howard's book and provide a review. I'd much prefer this to getting my money back because I was really interested in reading this book. But I can't seem to get either the book or a refund out of Amazon. So this "review" is about Amazon, not Michael Howard's book. Sorry if this seems inappropriate. But Amazon clearly failed to do their job, they've ignored my formal complaint, I've received no compensation or feedback, and I won't be doing any more business with Amazon. Core Reference for Intelligence Reform in 2001

There are other books on intelligence reform--the best being those by Bruce Berkowitz and Allan Goodman and by Loch Johnson--but this book is very special because it is written by an insider who has come to grips with the imperative for change and who is able to articulate the case for change in a way that others have not. This is arguably the single best and most elegant presentation for why our $30 billion a year intelligence industry must be turned upside down and shift resources away from secret satellite technology and toward analysis, analytic tools, and access to open sources of information.
The author very correctly focuses on the fact that intelligence is about getting useful tailored information to the policy consumer, not about secrets per se. He is perhaps the best spokesperson for the view that the old paradigm--collecting secrets at great expense about a single enemy--must be replaced by the new paradigm--making sense of vast quantities of information that is not secret and covers a diversity of constantly changing targets. He correctly focuses on the selection and intelligent analysis of information rather than the collection of isolated secrets--on making the most of open information.
The book is rich with anecdotal examples and makes a compelling case for dismantling the current intelligence stovepipes while simultaneously dismantling the culture of secrecy that prevents the sharing of useful information, not just within the Nation (e.g. with state and local law enforcement) but with coalition government and non-government allies of the moment.
The author, a past Vice Chairman of the National Intelligence Council and a learned man with deep ties to Harvard, the Council on Foreign Relations, and RAND, concludes on a bitter-sweet note that demands Congressional and Presidential reflection. He firmly believes that both the intelligence community budget and as much intelligence analysis as possible should be made public and be in the public service. This book is highly recommended, and could-together with the the other intelligence reform books published in the past two years--reasonably be used as the starting point for a complete make-over of the U.S. Intelligence Community.

Greg Treverton has written a much needed overview of the national intelligence process and correctly identified the challenges which face the US, in a post-9/11 world. His views of the world beyond 2010 are quite revealing and his challenges to the intelligence community to assess threats to the US are precisely focused.
