The Mafia: History and Legend, by Marco Gasparini

An illustrated history of the Mafia, focusing on this highly developed criminal organization both as a cult subject and an important social phenomenon. Movie classics like The Godfather epitomize our fascination with the underworld of the Mafia, conjuring images of cigar-smoking dons and shoot-outs in pizzerias. But behind the romantic myths of "men of honor" and omertà lies a very real world of murder, racketeering, and organized crime. Marco Gasparini traces the evolution of the Mafia from nineteenth-century Sicily to the streets of twentieth-century New York, to the international cartels that rule the illegal drug and arms trades today. In this authoritative volume he exposes the many secrets of an "octopus" organization that has remained impenetrable for decades, despite the efforts of heroic crime fighters such as New York police officer Joe Petrosino and the similarly ill-fated Italian judge Giovanni Falcone almost a century later. We discover the Mafia’s greatest godfathers, underbosses, and "soldiers," as well as its pentiti (or turncoats) and the most formidable wives of Mafiosi. This book not only focuses on the original Sicilian Cosa Nostra and its various branches—such as Al Capone’s Chicago Outfit or the still existent Corleonesi—it also features the equally bloody Neapolitan Camorra, which inspired the compelling documentary Gomorrah, and the Japanese Yakuza, the largest organized crime group in the world today, as well as the ever-growing Russian and Chinese "mafias." Mafia reveals the multi-faceted reality behind a phenomenon that has sparked the popular imagination for decades.

History & Pics
By Becky at "One Literature Nut"
Like many people, I've had a fascination and curiosity about the mafia and what fuels it today. This book, however, really helped me put together the history of the mafia in what was essentially a coffee table book that nails down the background, beginnings, and big players in this legendary crime powerhouse. What I especially liked about this book was the organized way that Gasparini broke down the history. In the book, he takes us back to the foundation in Sicily, Italy and what the mafia meant in the beginning. Since I had often heard ex-mafia family members say on television that it was an organization that was created to "take care of ones own," especially here in the United States, I always thought it had some creepy, honor code behind it. What I found through this book, however, was that it really was motivated by thug mentality that hid behind a code of honor. Originally, it was a band of men who grouped together to basically tax all the landowners and workers in their area. When people were too poor or resisted their brute ways, they sliced their faces and terrorized their families to make a point to everyone that this is what would happen if they resisted their control. Needless to say, the history and reports over the last century have blown my mind. The number of retaliations, murders, and criminal activities are shocking to me.

Gasparini really helped to put a human face to the victims. In the book, he showed news clippings and pictures of people the mafia held as ransom (one a little boy that they kidnapped to prevent his father who was in prison from ratting them out, who they later murdered) or were caught in the crossfires of grudge matches. I can't even imagine what judge or police officer would dare go against these men, especially when so many of them were murdered along the way. It was all pretty nauseating and frightening. To be honest, the one thing the book leaves open is how the mafia can be stopped. From the way the book lays out their history, their power seems endless. Yes, they have captured and put away hundreds of powerful players and their pawns, but the system is very much still in place. It's all very frightening.

If you're at all interested in learning some of the history of the mafia, but don't want to read a 400 page break down, this is a great place to turn. Although it seems like a giant coffee table-like book, there is plenty of history and information to help fill you in. I highly recommend it and think it is a great way into what I'm now realizing is a pretty convoluted history.

The Curse of the Mogul: What's Wrong with the World's Leading Media Companies, by Jonathan A. Knee, Bruce C. Greenwald, Ava Seave

If Rupert Murdoch and Sumner Redstone are so smart, why are their stocks long-term losers?

We live in the age of big Media, with the celebrity moguls telling us that "content is king." But for all the excitement, glamour, drama, and publicity they produce, why can't these moguls and their companies manage to deliver better returns than you'd get from closing your eyes and throwing a dart? The Curse of the Mogul lays bare the inexcusable financial performance beneath big Media's false veneer of power.

By rigorously examining individual media businesses, the authors reveal the difference between judging a company by how many times its CEO is seen in SunValley and by whether it generates consistently superior profits. The book is packed with enough sharp-edged data to bring the most high-flying, hot-air filled mogul balloon crashing down to earth.

From Publishers Weekly
The media industry is facing multiple financial and operational crises on an unprecedented scale. Rampant overpaying for acquisitions and strategic investments make incompetent corporate leaders as complicit in media's decline as the difficult economy. The authors, professors at the Columbia Business School, focus their sights broadly but home in on the usual suspects—Ted Turner, Rupert Murdoch, Disney and an alphabet of flailing companies (e.g., TBS, CNN, TNT). They discuss the dilemma of new media vs. old, the difficulty of establishing efficient operations, mergers that worked and mergers that didn't, and attempt to debunk any number of media myths, most assiduously the content is king platitude—considering especially that the movie, music and book industries are all floundering. An interesting subject in theory, but this treatment has the feeling of a homework assignment rather than an exposé and plods along to its meandering conclusion at a snail's pace. Dull writing and a complete lack of human interest detail make this a tough read and a tougher sell. (Oct.)

Essential for any media investor, executive, advisor or enthusiast
By gr8shopper
"The Curse of the Mogul" provides a clear, evidence-based approach to analyzing and understanding effective (and ineffective) media strategies. The book has profound implications with respect to how corporate executives of media companies should think about organic investment and M&A initiatives, how sector investors should evaluate sustainable barriers to enty, and how advisors could more effectively counsel their media clients regarding the defense and expansion of competitive advantages. Real stories, real companies and real names are brilliantly used to illustrate provactive viewpoints throughout this most engaging read.

Timely, Intelligent and Entertaining...
By MediaStudent101
With a pending merger between NBC & Comcast, Knee/Greenwald/Seave's book is remarkably relevant for investors, analysts, would-be moguls and those interested in any and all aspects of the media industry. "The Curse of the Mogul" clearly outlines the common pitfalls of media conglomerates (ones that are consistently repeated today) and offers insightful alternatives for a healthier, more profitable industry. I can't image why any media company operating today would not require their executives and business leaders to read this book.

Aside from the business acumen offered in "The Curse of the Mogul", it's a very entertaining read! The authors write with a sharp wit and dry-humor, making the 300-or-so pages a surprisingly quick and enjoyable read.

If the media industry interests you (and judging by the fact that you are on Amazon.com, that is likely the case), I suggest you check out this book.

A Must-Read Book on What Ails Many Media Companies
By John J. Blossom
Knee, Greenwald and Seave have done an excellent job in this book of delving into the fundamental flaws in the management strategies for many of the major media companies in the past few decades. Most importantly, they are able to evaluate not just consumer media markets but enterprise content markets as well to show how the problems are truly universal. Put simply, the self-congratulatory posturing of many media "moguls" who insist on ignoring the basics of economics and sound business management in pursuit of dominance and scale for its own end, regardless of its effectiveness in returning value to the marketplace. It also does a brilliant job of dissecting key flaws in many companies' technology strategies, showing where companies failed to perceive that their presumed technology advantages were in fact commoditized or wasted as companies pursued diversification and "synergies" that drew investment away from key platforms. If you're a professional in the content industry or a student of it, this will be an invaluable read.

Review

From the reviews:

"The Essentials of Autopsy Practice series is rapidly becoming to autopsies what the Recent Advances is to histopathology. … Overall, this is an excellent book, and a worthy successor to the first volume in the series. It will prove a valuable addition to the bookshelves of all pathologists engaged in autopsy practice." (Julian Burton, ACP News, Spring 2004)

"Throughout, the text is clearly laid out and eminently readable. Despite originating from numerous authors, the book reads well as a whole and is both a fascinating and informative read. Each of the chapters has been generously illustrated with appropriate tables and black and white photographs. … Essentials of Autopsy Practice easily lives up to its title and will make a valuable addition to the bookshelf of any pathologist with an autopsy practice." (Julian Burton, ACP News, Spring 2002)

"All chapters are good reviews of the specific topics, and the range of topics covered includes many of the difficult and contentious issues facing routine practice but which do not have coverage in the major forensic texts. …[A]n exceptional, compact review worthy of a place in the library of any department still engaged in autopsy examinations. It should be added to the ‘must read’ list of any trainees considering forensic practice. Even old hands will learn a thing or two, and some may be touched by the insights provided in this book to review their own practices." (Paul Botterill, Pathology, December 2002, 593)

Eat Fat, Lose Fat: The Healthy Alternative to Trans Fats, by Mary Enig, Sally Fallon

Coconut oil, red meat, and butter—these fats are traditionally considered harmful, but this powerful book, based on more than two decades of research, shows that these saturated fats are actually essential to weight loss and health. Eat Fat, Lose Fat flouts conventional wisdom by revealing that so-called healthy vegetable oils (such as corn and soybean) are in large part responsible for our national obesity and health crisis.

The three programs in this book, which features delicious coconut oil based recipes, among others, show that eating healthy fats is the answer to losing weight and achieving good health for a lifetime.

“If permanently losing weight while improving your health is a real goal, I highly recommend Eat Fat, Lose Fat.”—Dr. Joseph Mercola, bestselling author of The No-Grain Diet

“Dr. Mary Enig and Sally Fallon are two of the most important voices in the wellness revolution. Eat Fat, Lose Fat is a must read.”
—Jordan S. Rubin, author of The New York Times’ bestselling The Maker’s Diet

From Publishers Weekly
In this new addition to the fast-fix diet book shelf, Enig and Fallon attempt to correct what they see as Americans' false belief that tropical fats and oils (such as coconut and palm) are unhealthy, asserting that those fats (and coconut, especially) are beneficial saturated fats that should be more heavily incorporated into our diets. Enig, a biochemist and nutritionist, along with Fallon, president of the Weston A. Price Foundation (a non-profit dedicated to helping people implement healthy approaches to nutrition), say "high-fat, low-carb really works," eschewing the disastrous effects a high-fat diet can have on a person's heart. They like the Atkins diet, but say it doesn't take advantage of the "metabolism-boosting" powers of coconut oil. Their approach skews more toward traditional diets and away from modern diets (e.g., chose animal fats over vegetable oils; raw or fermented dairy products instead of pasteurized ones). Though based on considerable research, the book is somewhat off-putting. Its emphasis on one ingredient-in the recipe section, for example, one sample menu has readers eating a dish with coconut in it seven times in one day-seems nutritionally suspicious.

Dietary Bible for the New Millenium
By O. Merce Brown
*****

This book has been my dietary bible since reading it a year ago. It is a sourcebook for people wanting to eat a traditional diet, which is a diet solidly grounded in current dietary research, not unproven theories of the past. Look past the gimmicky cover here, as this is not a book about fads. It is a book about coconut oil as the foundation for an overall diet that is health-enhancing.

"Eat Fat, Lose Fat" is part of the growing body of literature supporting the eating of "real food", which is food that is healthy, tasty, not disease-promoting, slow, of exceptional quality, nutrient dense, organic, vital, traditional, local, seasonal, and clean. "Real foods" are the opposite of "fake foods", which are foods that are processed, dead, fast, nutrient poor, chemicalized, devitalized, rotten, spoiled, dead, old, or contaminated with antibiotics and growth hormones. It is based on scientific studies published in journals such as the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Lancet, and even JAMA. It is also based upon looking at the dietary practices of people of different cultures, a fascinating anthropological study that illuminates how indigenous people throughout history instinctively knew things that we are just now "discovering" with modern scientific methods.

The authors are Mary Enig, a world-renowned biochemist and nutritionist who spearheaded, with her research over 25 years ago, the recent move against trans fats at last, and Sally Fallon, The book is written in an interesting style, and is full of facts, explanations, how-to's, tips for

Chapter 1 sorts out the facts versus the fears about fats, debunking fat myths one by one, citing recent studies. The authors explain contradictory findings and flaws with past studies. One surprising fact is that most studies done in the past with coconut oil were done with fully hydrogenated coconut oil, a far cry from today's organic, extra virgin coconut oil or traditional society's raw coconut oil.

Chapter 2 explains the lipid hypothesis (and makes it interesting for non-chemistry majors like me) and explains the relationship between fat and heart disease and cholesterol. She explains how quality fats actually protect you from heart disease. This will be of particular interest to those eating a low-saturated-fat diet in hope of preventing or recovering from heart disease. All of this is written in a logical, yet not dry style.

Chapter 3 details the effects fats have on your various body systems, and the important nutrients that these systems need that can only be obtained from fats.

I know that up until this point this review makes the book sound boring, but it is very exciting, filled with facts and ideas that work.

Chapter 4 explains why diets with healthy fats help you to lose weight and be healthier at the same time, including important effects of healthy fats upon metabolism. This chapter also explains problems with ineffective weight loss theories of the past. It discusses the pros and cons of the Atkins diet, Ornish (low-fat vegetarian), Zone, South Beach, Weight Watchers, juice fasts, and the glycemic index.

Chapter 5 discusses the principles of healthy traditional diets, which surprisingly are similar the world over. It discusses individual foods at length as well as MSG, superfoods, fermentation, supplementation, raw vs. cooked, and more.

Chapter 6 is all about weight loss, based on four core principles:

1. Eat three meals per day, and always eat breakfast.

2. Eat traditional fats, including coconut oil.

3. Eat nutrient dense foods, particularly those supplying calcium and vitamins A and D.

4. Restrict calories moderately.

It also discusses special weight loss tips, such as taking coconut oil before each meal (and gives you 25 ways to use coconut oil in your meals). Of particular interest to me was why you should restrict your calories moderately but not too much. The chapter takes you step-by-step and day-by-day into starting your weight loss program, effectively holding your hand with shopping lists and daily menu plans.

Chapter 7 is about dietary emphases for recovery from various illnesses and health issues.

Chapter 8 is an everyday gourmet diet for those who are interested in maintaining their weight. It also covers dining out.

The rest of the book (about 100 pages out of almost 300 pages) is recipes and resources.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough for those who are serious and committed to their health, especially including those who are unwilling to lose weight through dangerous fad diets.

May Spark A Food Revolution
By Kaayla T. Daniel
Underneath this book's mainstream title and flashy hot-pink packaging lie a revolutionary premise. Real foods - including meat, eggs, butter, cream, coconut oil and other traditional high-fat foods - are the keys to weight loss, high energy, brain function, feelings of wellbeing and disease prevention. So throw out those low-fat, highly processed and packaged foods, forget about being a vegetarian, "bread-atarian" or "soy-atarian" and go back to enjoying the whole foods that your healthy ancestors really ate. In the process, you'll not only regain your health and find your perfect weight but totally enjoy your food. This book is a simpler version of the authors' grassroots classic NOURISHING TRADITIONS with the same sound science but a new emphasis on the healing power of coconut oil. As a Clinical Nutritionist, I have found that coconut cream and oil are very healing to the thyroid and greatly speed the recovery of former vegetarians and heavy soy eaters. The book also answers the many questions clients have about trans fats, vegetable oils, cholesterol and the dangers of the currently popular low fat/high protein diets. Highly recommended.

Sensible eating
By operacat
I have been using coconut oil and coconut milk for awhile. The oil is great for cooking and the milk tastes great in a shake! The fatty acids in coconut milk are the same/similar to those found in breast milk; now all baby formulas contain coconut oil. It makes sense that these fats are good for adults, too. Also, since adopting many of the principles from Nourishing Traditions, I have had much more energy, much less fatigue and no weight problem. My mother-in-law is always asking me how I can eat so much without gaining weight... I have also tried to feed my son this way. He's 15 months and is VERY strong and healthy - no ear infections and only 2-3 colds/viruses. It's science and it's common sense. Eat healthy to be healthy.

I liked this trio well enough despite the unlikable characters but...
By Erma
I read this as part of the trio of books available in July 2016 - the group I'd give 3.5 stars to - I read them one right after the other but I'm not sure I'll remember to watch for the 4th one next year or pursue this author's other works. Clearly, I have mixed emotions about these stories.

The characters are not very likable. There are story points that didnt make sense. Specifically - altho I'd probably be a sniveling, perpetually scared female if an alien showed up & took me captive - I'd rather read about someone who's behavior is braver, more entertaining - more as I'd wish to behave if faced with such a situation. Natalie was relentlessly irritatingly scared & whiny - yet fell into bed with her captor - then went back to being terrified. Julia in the second in the series was a more enjoyable character. Marcie in the 3rd was back in the whiney characterization but with a twist.

The hero(s) were equally difficult to like. Across the board, they were emotionless, pedantic, treated the women like dumb animals who needed to be trained (yet were in love with them), made little conversation, virtually no internal dialogue to let the reader see a 'different' side of them, no introspection, no give, no compromise. Most of their actions & cultural things were shrouded in secrecy - which made for some boring moments. Also, the skin so tough nothing can penetrate it is too extreme & I found it aggravating. The sex scenes were always vanilla, repetitive & didn't vary much - not within a book, not from story to story. Finally the whole children thing was creepy in an Alfred Hitchcock manner. Spoiler - why isn't this superior society anxious & working for female children when their females died out eons ago? To me that's an obvious story point that's just ignored.

The overall premise (non-abusive aliens mating with women) is one I've enjoyed by other authors. The writing is cohesive & general plots good. I wanted to know more about the world so I read on. If there was a 4th available right now, I'd probably move on to that too. But I doubt I'll be anxiously awaiting future installments. A world where the females are (protected! & loved!) 2nd class citizens with no rights, nothing to do all day, mates that are not companions and who are always in the dark about the activities, foundation, early years & culture of their 'beloveds' isn't very appealing.

fell flat for me
By Amazon Customer
**spoilers**

I was hoping for much more romance in this book. To me there was no development of the relationship between the hero and heroine. One day Zacar started telling Natalie he loved her and she accepts this and is overjoyed. I'm skeptical about his "love" given the vast differences between the human and alien cultures (what is valued, how strength is regarded, how all humans are "weak") and I still think while Zacar may be fond of Natalie, her greatest value lies in her ability to birth "warriors." Even his care of her, which is rooted in his mother's suicide, is only inspired by his cultural mandate to take care of breeder. Zacar was almost impossible to relate to because there was only two? short bits from his perspective. The cultural divide (foremost the treatment of women) are so harshly drawn by the author that it is impossible to believe that Zacar and Natalie can overcome it and have some semblance of a loving relationship that I look for in a romantic SF book. There is some self-awareness on the heroine's part as she thinks to herself whether or not she only loves Zacar because she is lonely and he is a strong man able to provide and protect for her but this source of conflict isn't resolved as Natalie predictably runs off into the wilderness to be captured by the enemy. When she is rescued by Zacar, somehow that reaffirms her love for him.

I think the biggest weakness of the entire book was the poor character and relationship development. There is a good skeleton of a story but it needs a lot more fleshing out.

Author has a very interesting imagination!
By Dailyreader
This is the second time I read Alien Mine. The last time I read this book was when it first came out. I truly enjoy it even though the alien's cultural beliefs seems harsh. I think that is why I like it because it not predictable and boring. Now I am going to read the rest of the series that was not available before. Strong Alpha males with a stubborn heroine. I enjoy seeing Natalie pushing Zacar's buttons and challenging his beliefs.
