Good wholistically, bad for reference
By Julius Walker
While the book is very informative, the organization seems haphazard. An important distinction to make is haphazard does not mean incomplete, it means that searching for information about a subject when the key terms are not intuitive is very hard. For example, terms and concepts related to perfusion is dispersed throughout the book in separate topics, each one only giving a piece of the puzzle of what perfusion is, details, and how it goes wrong. So understanding perfusion by looking at a particular section is not possible. All in all this is a good book because of the diagrams and congenial language.

Great review.
By David
As an operational EMT I feel this book is great. I do not understand why other reviewers labeled it as 'inadequate' for a national text when any and every EMT knows that you must refer to your state specific protocols IN ADDITION TO, NEVER IN LIEU OF the nationally accepted training texts.

MyBradyLab e-text code did not work
By Mtnrunr
I have used BradyBooks several times in classes for Outdoor Emergency Care and EMS. I have used the online e-text materials each time because they helped to reinforce concepts. I bought the book on Amazon with the e-text included, however, the code did not work. The error information I received told me that the code was not for this class, even though it was the code from the folder included with the book, and said it was for Emergency Care. I called the BradyBook support line, and they told me the same thing. They said I had to contact Amazon for a new code. Not wanting to waste anymore time on this, I just paid an additional $15, and bought access on my own since I did not even know how to address this with Amazon. I don't know how this happened, but I will not buy the e-text code when I order any future books, and will just buy it separately.

From Publishers Weekly
In an impressive, well-documented study of juvenile crime and parental sadism, L.A. attorney Mones, writing with sensitivity, eloquently defends brutalized teenage parricides. He argues that such youngsters, having blocked off feelings in order to survive years of parental sexual or other physical and mental abuse, and without protection from the community or the justice system, reach a breaking point that triggers their killing of one or both parents--son-father patricide being the most common. Mones further charges that society does not extend to these teenagers the compassion and aid accorded to battered wives who return violence with violence. He advocates the establishment of more shelters for abused youths and enactment of laws similar to those in Sweden against physical punishment of children.

From Library Journal
Not since the highly publicized 60 Minutes interview of Richard Jahnke, who at age 16 killed his father in their Wyoming home, and Alan Prendergast's ensuing book The Poison Tree ( LJ 6/1/86) have we glimpsed the stark reality of parricide. Although very little has been written on the subject, Mones is the leading authority in defending these cases. He humanely conveys the plight of children caught in the web of child abuse and/or neglect. With compassionate insight, he documents the cases of eight children and presents interviews with 12 more, chronicling the years of abuse that led to their desperate actions. Mones's study is more involving than Muriel Gardiner's Deadly Innocents: Portraits of Children Who Kill ( LJ 7/76). In an informative but casual writing style, he presents a strong case for compassion toward those trapped in a justice system unwilling or unable to cope with family violence. Highly recommended.

From Kirkus Reviews
From an attorney who specializes in defending children who kill parents, case studies that show how years of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse--sometimes all three--always provide the motive for these crimes. It is nearly a decade since the national conscience was pricked by commission reports and well-publicized revelations on the subject of child abuse. Among the saddest aspects of the eight tragic stories related here is that so many relatives, friends, neighbors, teachers, social workers, judges, and jurors still turn blind eyes to evidence of abuse. Then a child dies, or is driven to murder. It is Mones's job, as a lawyer and an expert on juvenile parricide, to help convince a horrified court and community that the murder of an abusive parent is defensible, if not justifiable. The children are not always lovable, the parents are not always archvillains. But the moving stories of Tim, Patty, Steve, Cindy and others who shot mother or father or both show they knew no other way out. Painfully graphic, the details of incest and violence are presented here as they were laid out for the juries. Baldly evident are the flaws in a legal system that protects a parent's absolute authority over a child, virtually no matter what. Informed by court records and extensive personal interviews, a welcome contribution to the growing literature on child abuse. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

honest author
By Freundin
After watching the Cody Posey murder trial (Court TV) I wanted to know more about this topic. Cody Posey testified in his trial that he had suffered horrible abuse at the hands of his father. I was very moved by his testimony and disappointed about his conviction. One of the interviewed Court TV trial experts for child abuse cases recommended the book When a Child Kills by Paul Mones. Luckily, my local library had this book.

This book is very shocking. I had to put it down after every chapter in order to process the facts. The author describes in a brutally raw way why some children kill their parents. I wouldn't call it child abuse in some of the described cases, I would call it severe torture.

The book (written in 1991) is timeless. Cody Posey's life story could have been one of the seven sad stories documented in this book. I am an atheist. I think hell is right here on earth.

A trial by peers? Don't believe it!
By Richard Parrot
Mones was 20 years ahead of his time writing about child advocacy. Even today, the title of his book challenges unspoken feelings of society's attitude toward "Honor Thy Mother and Thy Father." He gives an excellent explanation of the trama and neglect found in child abuse. Reading his book will bring out a mixture of painful feelings that are realistic to the abuse problem we continue to have today, yet try to deny. Each chapter is a true story of its own accord that is so intriguing you can't put this book down. If you want to know what goes on in the mind and life history of adolescents who kill their parents, and the manner of how the courts handle them, then this is the book to read. Mones' writing style is fluid and factual. I already ordered his next book "Stalking of Justice."

Brilliant but heartbreaking book
By Patsy Lally
Brilliant but heartbreaking book. Mones does a wonderful job of hitting every point and of explaining what I have always noticed, that the courts and the public alike seem to elevate the murdered parent and want to vilify the child even before the facts are in. This is a difficult book to read ... not because the writing is not crystal clear, which it is ... but because the facts Mones presents are so shocking. If a stranger rapes a child, he gets a long prison sentence. If a parent rapes a child, it is presumed that the child was somehow also culpable and the sentence is lower. Mones makes you realize that we must do better for our children.

Review
"Written with scholarly precision but without condescension The Etruscans deserves to be on the shelves of all those who want an up-to-date overview of the subject." History Today, Volume 48, Sept 98.

"As well as offering new approaches and interpretations the book presents the reader with concise summaries of, often highly contentious, recent debates." Vedia Izzet, Christ's College, Cambridge.

"In an impressively comprehensive book, they weave together material from a wealth of sources, classical literature, land surveys and excavation - their text providing a lesson in itself in how to recreate ancient history." History Today.

From the Back Cover
The Etruscans are one of history's extraordinary casualties. For many centuries they flourished exuberantly in central Italy, only to be completely absorbed into the growing Roman state. Their power, at its height, extended well beyond their borders: they were known and feared by Romans and Greeks alike. Their arresting visual culture was second to none in the peninsula, embracing complex funerary and domestic architecture, tomb-painting, narrative art, and jewellery of great luxury and refinement. Their cities grew to notable size and sophistication.

But they wrote no connected account of themselves that survives, and so this book focuses on three types of evidence for reconstructing Roman society: the extremely rich archaeological data, the accounts of Greek and Roman writers, and the inscriptions on Etruscan monuments.

Until recently there has been little effort to relate the Etruscans to ancient Mediterranean society as a whole or to the physical landscape that sustained them. This book attempts both. Included are some of the more recent findings from landscape archaeology which help to explain in what kinds of settlement the Etruscans lived, how densely the land was peopled, and how the landscape was organized for agriculture.

This approach is balanced by sections on material and visual culture, where the focus is on interpretation within the specific context and setting, and even here the landscape is never far from view. The landscape, ancient and modern, figures too in what is one of the book's unique features: a description of more than sixty sites and a listing of some thirty-five local museums in a format that is both analytical and practical.

About the Author
Graeme Barker is Professor of Archaeology and Head of the School of Archaeological Studies at the University of Leicester. He was previously Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield and Director of the British School at Rome.

Tom Rasmussen is Senior Lecturer in the department of Art History and Archaeology at the University of Manchester. He has been a fellow of the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara.

Etruscans in a nutshell....
By Dianne Foster
When I took a survey course on the history of Western Art, the instructor passed over the Etuscans in about 15 seconds. I belive he showed us one slide of the elaborate tomb of an Etruscan man who was reclined in death on the lid of his sarcophogus. In the instructor's mind, the Etruscans formed a brief interlude somewhere between the Greeks and the Romans.
My second encounter with the Etruscans came when I read D.H. Lawrence's book on his travels in Italy. In this book, Lawrence includes an extensive section on his visits to the Etruscan sites in Italy. Lawrence viewed the Etruscans with sympathy, and interestingly, THE ETRUSCANS takes off from Lawrence's book. Each section of this history is introduced by a passage from Lawrence who felt the Etruscans had been badly described by the Greeks and the Romans.
THE ETRUSCANS is a history book in the series on 'The Peoples of Europe' and the third in this series of synopses on various European ethnic groups that I have read. I intend to read more. I am not interested in becoming an expert on every group, but these books provide me with an overview that allows me to determine which distinct groups I might want to study futher.
Barker and Rasmussen have taken a wholistic approach in developing their text. They eschew the boundaries of traditional discplines without destroying the integrity of each of these various appoaches. They use all "sources, whether written records, inscriptions, monuments or excavated data..."
The book is laid out by topic, and the discussions in each section are drawn from the work of scientists and historians who have deciphered text (tomb inscriptions and other preserved written material including the "histories" of the Romans and the Greeks) and subtext (geological formations, pottery shards; bone fragments from slaughtered animals; flora including petrified seeds; remains of metal implements, tools, jewelry, etc.; remains of various structures including houses, boats, etc.; disturbances in the terrain resulting from the construction of canals, roads, walls, mines, farms, and necropolises).
The tale Barker and Rasmussen piece together is amazing. Scientists and historians know much more than they did about the Etruscans owing to recent advanced work involving forensics type investigation. The authors suggest much more can be known if additional steps are taken in the study of preshistoric Etruscan sites, i.e. researchers need to adapt the advanced techniques used in other places like Israel.
The Etruscans apparently weren't great artists like the Greeks but they made a number of material advances the Romans simply incorporated and claimed as their own inventions. For example, recent archeological research shows the Etruscans were engineers who invented the means of moving water via canals and irrigation channels long before the Romans built their aquaducts.
The Etruscans created a civilization that lasted longer than many others formed in Western Europe (800 B.C. to 300 B.C) and even after they were "incorporated" by the Romans they continued to make substantial contributions to the surrounding economy.
Apparently, the Etruscans were an archaic people, native to the part of Italy where their remains can be found. Although their language seems to be unlike that of most other historic Europeans the discovery of a Phoenician/Etruscan rosetta stone has allowed researchers to untangle a number of words, including the names of many of those laid to rest in the ornate tombs I was shown so long ago.

A full and engaging overview of the Etruscan culture
By Midwest Book Review
On of Blackwell Publishers' outstanding "The Peoples of Europe" series, Grame Barker and Tom Rasmussen's The Etruscans is a complete and superbly presented history of the Etruscan peoples, a society and culture that flourished on the Italian peninsula before the founding of Rome. The city states of the Etruscan civilization were based in west-central Italy around the area of modern Tuscany. Etruscans were sophisticated and innovative, and dominated the region from the eight century to the fourth century BC, when they were conquered and absorbed by the emergent Roman Republic. Shortly after the Roman conquest, an understanding of the Etruscan language and writings were lost and not to be recovered until the second half of the twentieth century. Very highly recommended and accessible reading, The Etruscans incorporates the findings of extensive archaeological investigations which, combined with a clearer understanding of Etruscan inscriptions, has now made possible a full and engaging overview of the Etruscan economy, society, culture, and history.

If you're interested in learning abour Etruscans without any kind of complications, this is your book.
By Andres Quintero
If you like history, this is your book. I just love history and history books, I began reading The Lombards, from this same series, and it was great, so I continued reading them all, until I read The Etruscans. The way this book is written makes you travel through time to those places and meet their peoples, and since it is really well documented with photographs, it makes you feel like wearing those little weird clothes they used.

A Mystery, a Riddle , an Enigma
By Borowy26
The origins of this novel are almost as mysterious as that of the central character in the motion picture of the same name. Arguments abound as to whether or not Orson Welles actually wrote the novel. Welles certainly signed the book contract with the publisher and held the copyright, but some sources suggest that Maurice Bessy wrote the novelization of the original screenplay written by Welles. Biographer Simon Callow, an actor in his own right, interviewed Robert Arden, who played the role of Van Stratten in the movie, and he indicated that Welles was the author and Bessy merely worked on the French translation of the book for its publication in that market. Later in life, Welles disowned the entire project and dismissed the book. Was he being truthful or was he simply playing coy with an interviewer?

Welles may have been disgusted with the entire project to the point where he wanted to deny any association with the movie and the book. As a motion picture, "Mister Arkadin" began as an ambitious international production. As the filming progressed, however, the lavish budget was cut and some of the latter sequences in the film appear to be cheaper than those filmed earlier. The producer became angry about costly delays and had the film taken away from Welles during the editing process.

As a result, multiple versions of the film were issued. The various scenes were assembled in different sequential orders depending upon the print of the film that was being exhibited in a given country. Welles had intended to tell the story using a series of flashbacks, but this technique was scrapped in one version of the finished film which was edited in strict chronological order. In some markets, this chronological print of the film was shown, but, later prints surfaced which incorporated the flashbacks envisioned by the director. Alternate takes of certain scenes in the film were made employing different performers in key roles as part of an effort to sell the movie to cinemas in different European markets. In some English speaking countries, the movie was released under an alternate title, "Confidential Report." The production disputes delayed the American release of the film for almost seven years. It opened in a handful of art house cinemas and never found an audience.
That is a shame because the beautifully photographed film is great escapist fare set against the background of numerous European locations.

Nonetheless, the story is fascinating. "Mister Arkadin" owes much to the success of Welles in Carol Reed's production of "The Third Man." The role proved to be so popular that Welles was hired to repeat the role of Harry Lime in a British radio series (the program took care to overcome the difficulty of Lime being killed in the conclusion of the movie!). Key elements of the plot of "Mister Arkadin" can be traced to three specific radio scripts that Welles wrote. The radio material was reworked for the screenplay which involves amnesia, smuggling, blackmail, murder, romance and a paranoid multimillionaire who is either trying to discover his own identity or erase his past.

Some sources indicate that the Arkadin character may be based upon Basil Zaharoff, the armaments tycoon, who was known as "The Merchant of Death." Zaharoff was played by the late Leo McKern in the memorable television series "Reilly: Ace of Spies." Whatever the case may be, the plot of the book is intriguing. Film fans may notice that the novel expands upon the plot of the movie in some respects. For example, there is more of a back story for the Van Stratten character. Many of the comedic touches from the film are reduced or eliminated. The book is written as a straight forward manner. There are no lengthy flashbacks as the book proceeds in chronological order.

For those who enjoy the book or the movie, it should be noted that Criterion Films has released the definitive print of the motion picture on dvd. The film has been restored and restructured to match the script of Welles as much as possible (arguably, no one knows how Welles may have altered the film if he were permitted to edit it), alternate takes have been preserved on a separate disc with plentiful production notes and bonus materials, including interviews with associates and biographers of Welles who were familiar with "The Lives of Harry Lime" radio series and the film "Mister Arkadin." The Criterion edition even includes a copy of the novel.

As far as books go, "Mister Arkadin" is a good thriller that can stand on its own without necessarily watching the movie. If you enjoy international intrigue and suspense, you are likely to find the book to be an entertaining read. One final note, the novel is available in various editions from different publishers, so seek out the title in whichever version is convenient.

Top 4 Computer Network Books Compared
By Michael Yasumoto
This review compares the following four books:
Computer Networks by Peterson and Davie (P & D)
Computer Networks by Tanenbaum
Computer Networks by Comer / Internetworking with TCP/IP
Computer Networking by Kurose and Ross (K & R)

By far the best book in the list is "Computer Networking" by Kurose and Ross. This book covers all of the essential material that is in the other books but manages to do so in a relevant and entertaining way. This book is very up to date as seen by the release of the 5th Ed when the 4th Ed is barely two years old. There are lots of practical exercises using wireshark and the companion website is actually useful and relevant. The attitude of this book with regard to teaching networking concepts could be summed up as "try it out and see for yourself". One interesting thing to note is that the socket programming example are all in Java.

Next up is the Peterson and Davie book which covers everything that Kurose and Ross discuss but is slightly more mathematical in how it goes about things. There are a lot more numerical examples and defining of formulas in this book which is fine by me and in no way detracts from the book. Also the socket programming examples are in C which is a little more traditional. The points where this text loses ground to K & R is that it doesn't have the practical application exercises that K & R has and it also doesn't extend the basic networking theory that is covered to modern protocols like K & R.

The two Comer books come next. Comer's "Computer Networks" book is probably the most introductory book out of this whole list and is more of a survey of networking topics that doesn't cover anything in any real depth. Still, this is an excellent book in that it is a quick clear read that is very lucid in its explanations and you can't help feeling that you understand everything that is covered in the book. Comer's TCP/IP book is the equivalent of the other authors' computer network books and in that respect it is pretty average. It covers all of the relevant material and in a manner which is more than readable but that is all. There is nothing exceptional about the book which stands out from the rest.

Last comes Tanenbaum's book from the author who is probably most famous for his OS books. This is probably the most technical and detailed of the books with lots of sample C code belying is experience with operating systems and their network stack code. The weak point of this book is that all of the code and technical minutia might prevent the reader from seeing the forest for the trees. Unless you are trying to learn how to program your own network stack for a Unix/Linux system, then I would get either the K & R book or the P & D book to learn networking for the first time. This book would best be served as a reference in which case the technical nature of the book becomes a benefit rather than detracting from the text.

A good book, but no physical layer ? Wouldn't recommend to total newbies.
By L.I.T.
After reading all the good reviews, I had a big expectation on this book and was a little disappointed in the end. I have read network books by Peterson&Davie, Tananbaum, and Forouzan so far, and Kurose's book comes somewhere between Tanenbaum's very detailed approach and Forouzan's plain and simple approach.

Pros and cons from my observation.

Pros
- Spends a lot of pages for application layer.
- The very detailed explanation on transport layer and network layer. Probably the best among all the computer network books on this part.
- Every protocol comes with RFC# and many references. Good for further study.

Cons
- Data link layer could have been better presented. Spends the entire chapter for CSMA(Ethernet) and not much mentions about connection oriented protocol. ATM is assigned only 2 pages which gives the readers nothing. Other important protocols(HDLC,Token-ring etc) should have been explained.
- Explanation on IP address(classful, CIDR, subnet) isn't deep enough.
- No chapter for physical layer. This is a big negative point.

Overall, it's a very good book, but I have to say that this book is top-heavy, by which what I mean is the focus is more on upper layers of protocol stack and many things are left out in the lower layers. May be intended to software people, but not for hardware people.

I'm not new to computer networking and can't read this book from the beginner's viewpoint, but I'm under the impression this book might be a little difficult to follow for those who have no idea how computer networks work. The reason I'd think that way is because of top-down approach. Although the total newbies have no idea about computer networking, they may have some vague idea about some data or signals transmitted between two hosts. Starting the discussion with logical properties(process) as in this book might lose the beginner readers in application layer or transport layer chapters. I'd guess it's probably easier for them to start out with physical layer which they can understand intuitively and climb up the protocol stack from there rather than climb down from the application layer. Many books are taking bottom-up approach and there is a reason for that, especially when the book is intended to beginners. What's even worse is that physical layer isn't even covered in this book. Therefore, I'd recommend Tanenbaum's book or Forouzan's to the beginners.

Thorough book, with some reservations
By rpv
No doubt this is an excellent book for academics. There are thorough topics with detailed explanations. First some negatives before I go onto positives. Quickly glancing at the book, there are not many diagrams. I would have preferred lot of diagrams. Also I miss many practical examples for professionals, maybe Richard Steven's book is ore apt for that. I would have still preferred examples on Linux where applicable. Other problem is on physical condition. The hardcover was almost torn on arrival and after one day the hard cover came out from the book. I would have preferred a slightly larger font/better quality. I have a feeling the publishers are focusing on electronic format more than ever. Maybe iPad/Kindle editions are better.

Not for positives, The explanations on the layers are fantastic. There is an introduction on Layer 7 HTTP in beginning, and it is explained in detail later on. The chapters on TCP is really good. Overall for learning computer networks for a BS/MS course this book is very good.

The most important aspect to this book are the exercises. Some of the best problems in any networking book are found in this book. It instills the readers a keen interest to think and ponder over issues. Problems and good exercises make a book ultimately. Group study/class discussions can benefit a lot for instructors. Overall my recommendation is this is a very good for academics. For working professionals, I would lean towards Richard Steven's TCP/IP illustrated Volume 1 Edition 2.
