Should be mandatory reading for any networking student.

I just passed and received my CCNA Certification 2 months ago. I purchased this short book in order to brush up for a technical interview (which got me my first IT job), and I really wish I would have had this before I started studying for my CCNA. This book ties everything in the 7 Layer OSI model together in a very easy way to understand. It also explains how information is handed from one layer to another without diving into separate subjects, which loses your train of thought. This is how the OSI should be taught.... period. Can't recommend it enough.

Please give this a read before you buy!

These tab books are NEVER 100%. I've played for about 22 years and have never found one that is dead-on. That said I'm a life-long Van Halen fan, I'm accustomed to Eddie's style of playing, and I without doubt know when a tab book is wrong.

This book will give you a great starting point--no doubt. Maybe they were in a rush to throw this together but I was very disappointed. I find it easier to read the tab to learn a song than to figure it out by ear. I've only learned a few songs from the album and moderately 'learned' others but plan to learn them 100%.

Here's what I can speak for:
Tattoo: Verse sections are inaccurate but very close--it at least sounds correct. -least favorite song on the album but I've watched him play it live--tab is wrong.
She's the Woman: Seems 100% accurate.
You and Your Blues: Intro is VERY wrong--not at all where Eddie plays it.
China Town: Main riff after tapping intro is wrong. The notes are right, but it's not what/how it's played.
BLOOD AND FIRE: MY FAVORITE OF THE ALBUM. Verse sections are wrong but very close. The tapping section towards the end of the solo are WAAAAYYYYY OFF. Very poor effort at transcribing.
Outta Space: Almost correct with the exception of the tapping section at the beginning of the solo. Very wrong.
Big River and Beats Workin': both 'seem' fine. I have not learned them the whole way through yet but I think they are correct.

Like I said, this book will give you a good starting point. I've never even been a person that is hell-bent on playing a solo note-for-note, but the solos noted above are very wrong. I own several of these tab books including the entire Van Halen catalog, several Zakk Wylde books, Metallica, and others. I'VE HONESTLY NEVER SEEN ONE THIS INACCURATE.

Check out software called Transcribe! which is software that will slow down a solo to a crawl for you to figure it out. You can just import any mp3 file into the software and select how much you want to slow it down. I was able to figure out Blood and Fire and Outta Space solos using this. They offer a 31 day free trial too but I have not bought it (yet).

The Carlswick Treasure

The Carlswick Treasure is book two in the series. I loved the first one, and in this one, the excitement continues. The characters are perhaps more interesting since they are already known. I am anxious to read the third in the series. Book two, like book one, comes to a satisfying conclusion but leaves possibilities. I like when a series of books concludes each volume with a stand-alone ending. The readers purchase of the next book is left to desire to read more about the characters and enjoy more of the author's storytelling craft. I don't feel coerced.

The Carlswick Treasure - A treasure of a novel.

In this, the second book in The Carlswick Mysteries series, writer S.L. Beaumont continues to develop the characters of Stephanie and James and their friends and families. Her writing is vivid, the storyline rocks along, her prose stimulates the senses - I can imagine myself in the bar, hear the band playing and smell the damp earth of the wine caves in the French countryside. Another great read, I thoroughly enjoyed it, looking forward to the third instalment.

Really looking forward to the third book now!

An excellent follow on to the Carlswick Affair, with the characters developed in that first book the story moves at pace, twisting and turning as it goes. Second books are always difficult and this does a great job of moving the story along while keeping enough doubt as to how the whole story will come to a close in the third book. Can't wait!

A quaint period piece

I read this because it is the first science fiction novel written in our country (New Zealand). Sir Julius Vogel was a man of his time - you don't get to be Prime Minister by being a weird outsider, but also far sighted, especially in terms of women not only having the vote but being active in Parliament. In terms of political power, it actually underestimated the power women held around the turn of the millennium here. Other than that, the book is mostly irritating. The characters are rather flat caricatures - the noble British emperor and the positively saintly heroine. Three cheers for the British Empire.

None the less, I may be being quite unfair. It is supposedly a history, and they tend to be strong on event and weak on dialogue. I'd have to compare it with another political prediction novel written circa 1889 of events a century away and I don't know of one. Early SciFi tended to predict technological trends. There is some of that too. Aluminium zepplins driven by a two component rocket fuel I think, but I may have misread the description. No regrets about reading it though. Just wished it had been more of a novel.

Jean likes gin... but gin doesn't like Jean.

John Trim's English Pronunciation Illustrated is an excellent tool for teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language. It goes over the major phonemes individually and then works through minimal pairs. Each sound is illustrated with examples of simpler words and rather complicated sentences -- and accompanied by witty cartoon-type pictures that demonstrate what is going on. The books works on many many levels -- from the simplest sound exercizes with kids who love the pictures and have fun trying to pronounce the words -- to adults, who will understand the subtler humor and can appreciate the gentle mockery of British stereotypes.
Ex: Long i: sound Stephen meets Eve one evening for a meal. Stephen is greedy. He eats three pieces of cheese. Asleep, Stephen dreams of Eve. He sees Eve fleeing from three beasts.
The only problem for American readers lies in the British pronunciation -- which means that some of the examples do not work: "cart" and "can't" are not fine illustration of a long a sound for American speakers of English.

Very FUNNY!!! And very USEFUL. What more more can one wish for???

Back in the days when I was learning English, that tiny book was of huge help to nail those subtle differences between "short" and "long" vowels ("ship" vs. "sheep"). You definitely don't want to slip in a short vowel sound when you're talking about "put a SHEET on the bed"! :)

Illustrated with funny, and memorable, cartoons.

After all these years, I still remember the vignette about "Jean (long vowel) likes gin (short vowel)"... with cartoon of lady indulging in her favorite drink... followed by the punchline "BUT gin DOESN'T like Jean" - cut to cartoon of Jean knocked unconscious on the floor!

Also some good tongue-twisters to practice difficult sounds for non-native speakers, such as "TH" - a story about 33 thugs...

Whether you teach ESL or are a non-native speaker polishing your own English, rush to get your hands on this jewel of a little book, and HAVE FUN with learning - the way learning a new language ought to be!!
