Judicious editing would have improved this often riveting but at times tedious, rambling family history. The saga begins with Georgian Asa G. Candler, who in 1888 paid a fellow druggist $2033 for the rights to a headache remedy called Coca-Cola and, through an innovative national marketing campaign, enriched himself, the Methodist Church, Emory University, his native Atlanta, myriad social causes and his 400-plus descendants through company profits which amounted to $1618 million net in 1991. With freelance writer Roberts, Graham, herself a Candler descendant, researched public records, private letters and unpublished documents for this business saga and family cavalcade of triumphs and sorrows, the latter brought on by sibling rivalry, infidelity, child mortality, alcoholism and accidental deaths. A highlight here is a hilarious inside look at the company's famously disastrous 1985 decision to "improve" the still-secret Coke formula to make the drink taste more like arch-rival Pepsi.

The title leads one to believe that this book is about the business of Coca-Cola and the people who owned it. However, in the preface, Graham, who is the great-great grandaughter of Coca-Cola founder Asa Cander, states that she was inspired to write the book after searching for photographs to complete a family scrapbook. The focus is on the personal history of the Candlers, with only three chapters devoted to the company. Business historians will be disappointed to find that Graham and her coauthor write little about the Candlers' management practices. The narrative is gossipy, and the text is verbose. Nonetheless, the book might appeal to Georgia history buffs. Recommended only for Southeastern collections.

Great read for teens who don't normally enjoy reading.

My students enjoyed this book a lot. I work with very tough urban teens, many of whom are delayed in their reading. This book ranks among their favorites of the year. Some of the guys wanted to take it with them, but I had limited copies. Try this novel with teens who are hard to please. Readability index seemed to be pitched at about grade 3, but that does NOT diminish the content whatsoever! I also enjoyed it!

Review:

"Unchained" by L. B. Tittle was very interesting read. I found it very interesting to see how L.B. Tittle was able to get this family on the right path from..the mother having been strung out on pot and meth...father dying of drug overdose
and the child (TJ) heading in the wrong direction of life due to drugs and gangs.

This novel is definitely for the student or person who may be faced with these type of situations in their life. I believe this young man problems were greatly helped by being removed from the problem(s) and that being drugs and gangs. By
Thomas Jahman (TJ) getting away from that old type of life for a few years gave him some hope that there was something out there greater for him. Having people like Ms. Miller, Ms. Dixie, Annabell, and Billy, and even his Mom(toward the end) was definitely a plus for TJ in making some wise choices. So, what good choices did TJ make?

Now, TJ was back to his place at the dinner table with Ms Dixie and all her children.
Back to saying a prayer before dinner and back to holding Annabelle's hand. Back home!
OK, I have probably told you to much but it is a good read to pick up!

I enjoyed "Unchained" and I think anyone wanting to read and know about inner city drugs and gangs would really get something positive out of this read. I would definitely recommend "Unchained."

I was impressesed when i got this book just to read and then i was shocked at how good a book it was and that i just got it to have something to read and i became addicted to this book i told my self that i was only going to read one more chapter and it turrned in to 10 more so i would say this is a good book

About the Author
Dr. Maryanne M. Mowen is Associate Professor Emerita of Accounting at Oklahoma State University. She currently teaches online classes in cost and management accounting for Oklahoma State University. She received her Ph.D. from Arizona State University. Dr. Mowen brings a unique interdisciplinary perspective to teaching and writing in cost and management accounting, with degrees in history and economics. She has taught classes in ethics and the impact of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act on accountants. Her scholarly research focuses on areas of management accounting, behavioral decision theory, and compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. She has published articles in journals, such as Decision Science, The Journal of Economics and Psychology, and The Journal of Management Accounting Research. Dr. Mowen has served as a consultant to mid-sized and Fortune 100 companies and works with corporate controllers on management accounting issues. She is a member of the Northern New Mexico chapter of SCORE and serves as a counselor, assisting small and start-up businesses. Outside the classroom, she enjoys hiking, traveling, reading mysteries, and working crossword puzzles.

Dr. Don R. Hansen is Professor Emeritus of Oklahoma State University. He has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Brigham Young University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in 1977. Dr. Hansen has published articles in both accounting and engineering journals, including The Accounting Review, The Journal of Management Accounting Research, Accounting Organizations and Society, Accounting Horizons, and IIE Transactions. He has served on the editorial board of The Accounting Review. His outside interests include family, church activities, reading, movies, and watching sports.

Dr. Dan L. Heitger is the Deloitte Professor of Accounting and Co-Director of the Center for Business Excellence at Miami University. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University and his undergraduate degree in accounting from Indiana University. He actively works with executives and students of all levels in developing and teaching courses in managerial accounting, business sustainability, risk management, stakeholder management, governance, and business reporting. He co-founded an organization that provides executive education for large international organizations. His interactions with business professionals, through executive education and the Center, allow him to bring a current and real-world perspective to his writing. His published research focuses on managerial accounting and risk management issues and has appeared in HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW, BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH IN ACCOUNTING, ACCOUNTING HORIZONS, ISSUES IN ACCOUNTING EDUCATION, JOURNAL OF ACCOUNTANCY, and MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING QUARTERLY. His outside interests include hiking with his family in the National Park system.

From the Author:

When my children were in preschool, I found it hard to find good quality books in English and Spanish. This difficulty inspired me to create the English and Spanish Foundations Series. This series started out with only a few books, and has now grown to include over 50 products.

Over the course of my career, I have developed over 600 books and other products for some of the largest publishers in the United States and have received numerous awards and accolades. My clients have included companies such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Dental Association, American Medical Association, Cook County Hospital, Kraft General Foods, Target, Boarders, Costco, Sams, Burlington Coat Factory, U.S. Post Office, World Book, American Family Insurance, Sate Farm, Reader's Digest, Heinemann Library, HarperCollins, Dorling Kindersley, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Cengage Learning, McGraw Hill, Pearson and others.

I am a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago and have a BFA in Visual Communications. While at SAIC, I also won a scholarship to study in Europe at the Basel School of Design. I also have a master's degree in Service Design and Design Research from IIT School of Design, with an emphasis on User-centered, Research and Analysis, Service Design and Cross-Cultural Research.

I am fluent in English and Spanish and live in the Chicago area with my husband, two children and our dog Chuchi.

Poor product description---No book, just CD.

I was expecting a book and CD..this is only a CD, you need to buy the book separately. And when I went to buy the book, it's ~$24...so it total that'd be $35 for one book with CD for a kid...RIDICULOUS!! At least my kids can listen to the spanish, but it's not going to be as helpful to them learning to read as I wanted.

My kids like the songs. We were a little disappointed it doesn't come with the book to follow along. Nothing in the product description said that was needed.

Simple and to the point

This is a simple book that even my husband can read in Spanish. My son loves this book. I'm not sure what it is, but he wants it read to him over and over again. It teaches mom, dad, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, grandma, grandpa, cat, dog, and family. The pictures are playful. It's appropriate for toddlers.
